2012 Valencia MotoGP FP3 Result: Pedrosa Leads As Conditions Improve

Dani Pedrosa took advantage of rapidly improving track conditions to top the final session of free practice for the MotoGP class at Valencia. Like most of the riders, Pedrosa spent a large part of the session sitting in the garage waiting for the track to dry, after a few exploratory laps to check conditions. As the sun started to burn off the damp patches, the entire field came out to test the surface.

Lap times dropped as the session went on, and in the end, it was Dani Pedrosa who ended the day as fastest. The Repsol Honda man had a clear advantage, ending over six tenths ahead of the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha pairing, Andrea Dovizioso taking his turn to lead Cal Crutchlow. LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl grabbed 4th, finishing ahead of Nicky Hayden on the Ducati. Jorge Lorenzo was once again slow off the mark, managing only the 6th fastest time over a second and a quarter slower than Pedrosa. Alvaro Bautista set the 7th fastest time, finishing ahead of Randy De Puniet, the Frenchman having a good weekend in difficult conditions. Casey Stoner, still cautious of his injured ankle, ended the session in 9th, ahead of Michele Pirro on the Gresini FTR Honda.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. to take tests on Monday and Tuesday to determine Martinsville status

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. is scheduled to undergo tests, both inside the car and out of it, on Monday and Tuesday to determine his availability for Sunday's Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville.

Junior has missed the previous two Sprint Cup Series races after being diagnosed with a concussion after a last lap pileup at Talladega two weeks ago. At the time, it was also determined that he had suffered a previously undiagnosed concussion at the end of August at Kansas Speedway when he crashed during a Goodyear tire test.

On Sunday, team owner Rick Hendrick originally said before the race that Junior had already been cleared to race at Martinsville. However, in a mid-race press conference on Sunday, Hendrick clarified his remarks, and said that Junior still needed to pass a test in the car at Gresham Motorsports Park on Monday, and would see neurosurgeon Dr. Jerry Petty at Petty's office on Tuesday.

[Also: Retaliation attempt fails for Danica Patrick (Video)]

"However, I didn't know until (Hendrick Motorsports PR Director Jesse Essex) informed me that I had gotten ahead of myself and that there is a closed test on Monday that Dr. Petty will attend," Hendrick said. "Dale will be back in the car (for that test) and he'll make the decision with a final test on Tuesday. So, we don't foresee any problems but I didn't read my emails this morning and I kind of got ahead of myself. I talked to the doctor myself and everything went good in Pittsburgh and Dr. petty felt real good about it. And I did know that they were going to shake down a car, but I didn't know that the doctor was going and that he would actually be evaluating him Tuesday. I apologize for that. The test (Tuesday) is in (Dr. Petty's) office. The test Monday is in the car."

Junior saw concussion specialists last week in Pittsburgh, and Hendrick said he would be shocked if Junior wasn't cleared for Martinsville.

"I will be shocked if he's not in the car. Everything looks good. His attitude and the way he feels, he's had no headaches since Thursday or Friday of Charlotte and the tests have gone real well. I think Dr. Petty is just being super-cautious and I applaud him for that," Hendrick said.

Happy Hour: Is Denny Hamlin the new Mark Martin?

Welcome to the latest Happy Hour mailbag! You know how these work: You write us with your best rant/ joke/one-liner at happyhournascar@yahoogroups.com or on Twitter at @jaybusbee, we respond to your messages, everyone goes away with a smile on their face.

Yep, we've been AWOL the last couple weeks. Well, AWOL from these pages, at least. Been covering the Falcons in the NFL and the Rockets in the NBA and the tornado in Tuscaloosa and Florida football and ... you get the idea. Sorry 'bout that, but hey, we're back now! Let's get to it, shall we?

Do you think Denny Hamlin is this generation of drivers' Mark Martin? Always a bridesmaid in the championship and never the bride?

? Jenn K.
Big Spring, TX

In an absolute sense, I think Hamlin would be flattered to be considered his generation's Mark Martin, who's the very definition of class and grace. Sure, he's a little cranky at times, and sure, he's 40 years too old to be listening to the music he does. But he's one of the best cats in the garage, and he'll be missed whenever he finally decides to hang up his lil' sneakers.

That said ... I get your point. Martin has come oh so close so many times, and much as we like him, he ain't the prettiest bridesmaid in town. I think Hamlin isn't quite in that category yet. He's dealing with the hundred-year flood of Jimmie Johnson's reign; take Vader out of NASCAR and I'd bet Hamlin has at least one Cup by now. I think he's got at least one more Chase of falling short before the can-he-get-it-done talk begins in earnest.

____________________

Two guys enter the Chase even in points. Guy # 1 gets wrecked in the first race and comes in last. He then wins ALL 9 remaining races. Guy # 2 comes in 2nd in every race and leads one lap each race. Guess who gets to be Champion?

? Carl
Meadville, PA

Driver #1 would have 424 points (1 + (9x47), assuming he didn't lead the most laps in any of those wins) and Driver #2 would have 430 points. Driver #2 is your winner! That extraordinarily unlikely scenario is, in fact, a good case study and backs up what I've been saying for awhile: NASCAR either has to improve the value of a win (and a high finish) and/or decrease the penalty of a loss. We can't have it both ways; a straight, no-Chase race-to-the-finish could be over by September, but a manipulated-drama Chase will still be dramatic.

____________________

Granted, Jimmie Johnson is a really good driver. But does it say something about the nature of a track, racing quality, too-similar cars or NASCAR's caution "strategy" that a guy that practically destroys his car still finishes in the Top 10? Credit their strategy, but I have to think there is something wrong with the Pit Road Opening Rules after a caution that allows a guy to wreck and still finish so high unless everyone else screws up and brings the field back together. What do you think?

? Zach Hall
Ft. Sill, OK

Honestly? I think you're trying to create a solution for a problem that doesn't exist. Both the 48 and 2 teams are masters at understanding how cautions work and how to blend the right combination of splash-and-go, two-tire/four-tire, wavearound and assorted other hokey-pokeys to get themselves up to the front of the pack.

Look, I get how frustrating it is to have Jimmie Johnson winning once again. I said before the Chase: I don't root for drivers, I root for stories. And there are 11 stories in the 12-driver Chase more interesting than Johnson winning his sixth Cup. That said, you have to give the guy respect, particularly when it's something as visibly obvious as pit road strategy. The #2 team has paid enough attention that it's caught up; it's high time some other drivers and crew chiefs did, too.

____________________

Indy Car had a problem with pack racing that came to a boil with the death last October of Dan Wheldon. That accident was directly related to pack racing. This year, under different race management, Indy Car dealt with the pack racing problem at the Texas Motor Speedway by reducing downforce, thus making the cars tougher to drive and putting "racing" back in the hands of the drivers.

Could NASCAR do something similar and reduce down force to make the cars harder to drive, resulting in less pack racing and the eventual "Big One"?

? Bill Phypers
Brewster, NY

They could, but here's the problem: you reduce packs, you get parades. And parades are already enough of a problem at too many 1.5-mile tracks right now. There's a sweet spot at the midpoint of pack racing, tandem racing (at superspeedways) and follow-the-leader, and you can be sure that everyone involved with competition is trying to locate that spot (which may or may not even exist). It's like trying to back up your car at 40 mph; every correction you make verges on an overcorrection. Just a guess, but I'm thinking that NASCAR will focus on engines rather than aerodynamics to manage competition for the short term.

____________________

So, with @AJDinger back and in the #51, where does this leave Regan Smith? Does Smith have to wait until the #88 (Nationwide) ride opens next year or will they replace Whitt with Smith now? Is (Phoenix Racing GM) Steve Barkdoll's choice to use AJ prove that Smith has something else going?

? Chizler

I think it's more just a case that Phoenix believes AJ has more upside than Regan. Which is debatable, since both have had moderate success in reasonable equipment. At this point, you've got to think Phoenix Racing will take any driver who doesn't actively sling wrenches at people's heads.

As for Smith ... good question. He's a quality driver who ought to get a shot in a good ride, but he's fallen into that pit of not being with a top-flight team, and thus subject to the whims of the economy. (See also: Brian Vickers, David Reutimann, David Ragan ... you get the idea.) I'd bet he'll do some good Nationwide time while waiting for the ranks above him to thin out a bit, but that's tough to say. Anybody want to pony up a cool $20 mil for a new Sprint Cup team? Please?

Bridgestone Press Release: Shinji Aoki Says 1000cc Machines Had Little Effect On Tire Wear At Phillip Island

Bridgestone issued their customary post-race press release today, discussion the way their tires handled the cooler temperatures and higher speeds at the Phillip Island circuit on Sunday. The press release is published below:

Phillip Island MotoGP™ debrief with Shinji Aoki

Wednesday, 31 October 2012
Bridgestone slick compounds available: Front: Soft, Medium. Rear: Medium, Hard (Asymmetric)
Bridgestone wet tyre compounds available: Soft (Main), Hard (Alternative)

Repsol Honda’s Casey Stoner took his sixth consecutive victory at Phillip Island ahead of newly-crowned World Champion Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo in second place, while Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow completed the podium in third place.

Weather conditions over the weekend were cool, with wind and intermittent rain also contributing to making the state of the track quite challenging for riders on Friday and Saturday. Track temperatures for the race were around the 30°C range making the softer option slicks the popular choice. All twenty riders taking selected the soft compound front slick, while all but one rider selected the medium compound rear slick which was the softer of the two options.

Luke Lambert to crew chief for Jeff Burton in 2013

The preparations for the 2013 Sprint Cup Series season have already begun.

Richard Childress Racing announced Monday that Luke Lambert would be the crew chief for Jeff Burton and the No. 31 in 2013 and that current crew chief Drew Blickensderfer would be replaced by Shane Wilson atop the team's pit box for the final three races of 2012.

"I want to thank Drew for all of his effort with the No. 31 Caterpillar team this season," Richard Childress said in a release, "He's a great crew chief and I can't say enough about his dedication to RCR. Making the move now, before the season is over, gives Drew some additional time to pursue other opportunities.

"Shane is a proven winner and I appreciate his willingness to step into this role for the balance of the 2012 season."

Wilson was Kevin Harvick's crew chief for the first 24 races of the season before he was replaced by Gil Martin, Harvick's old crew chief. Wilson also served as interim crew chief for Paul Menard when his crew chief, Slugger Labbe, was serving a NASCAR suspension. So after Texas, Wilson will have crew chiefed for all of RCR's teams in 2012.

According to a report from Fox Sports, Blickensderfer will be the crew chief for Marcos Ambrose in 2013, replacing Mike Ford, who became Ambrose's crew chief for the final 10 races of 2012 when Richard Petty Motorsports swapped crews before the Chase. Before coming to Richard Petty Motorsports, Ford crew chiefed for Denny Hamlin, and was atop the pit box when Hamlin finished second to Jimmie Johnson in 2010. Per the Fox story, Ford has an offer to crew chief at BK Racing in 2013.

Lambert and Burton worked together for the final 17 races of 2011 when Lambert replaced Todd Berrier as Burton's crew chief. Lambert is currently the crew chief for Elliott Sadler in the Nationwide Series. Sadler is leading the points standings with three races to go. Burton is 19th in the Sprint Cup Series standings.

Happy Hour: Should Dale Jr. and Chad Knaus join forces?

Welcome to the latest Happy Hour mailbag! You know how these work: You write us with your best rant/ joke/one-liner at happyhournascar@yahoogroups.com or on Twitter at @jaybusbee, we respond to your messages, everyone goes away with a smile on their face.

It's Talladega week, one of my most favorite weeks of the year! I love everything about this race, from the on-track action to the infield, and even the watered-down version of Talladega we're seeing these days is better than most other tracks. If you've got a great infield story to share, spill. We want to know!

For now, your letters.

Rick Hendrick has bent over backwards to give Dale Jr. a shot at winning the title (different crew chief, garage, etc.). Do you think if he fails AGAIN, Hendrick will give him Chad Knaus?

? Becky Kemp
Bowling Green, OH

This is perilously close to one of those trolling letters that always fill my inbox ? "Hey, Busbee: since Dale Jr. sucks so much, you think he ought to just go to France where he can be sucky among a bunch of other sucks?" But let's be generous today and take it at face value.

For starters, I think Rick Hendrick has to be delighted with how Junior has done so far. The guy finished second in the regular season, for heaven's sake. And while he's not exactly tearing up the Chase, nor are 39 other drivers. I'd consider this season an exceptional success, and a solid building block for the future. So, no, I don't think Hendrick will be replacing anybody on Junior's team, least of all his crew chief. I'd love to see what Knaus does with a different driver, but I've got to think it'd be one of those David Lee Roth-Eddie Van Halen situations where they're amazing together but utter garbage when they're apart.

Did football come over to NASCAR? Is there really a bounty for anyone who wrecks Danica? Sure seems like the guys can't handle her racing with them, especially if it looks like she might have a good run. I have watched many of the times she has been wrecked and yea a few she should have known better but most sure look like the boys can't man up and let her race with them!

? diniwoyali

Eh, I think we're past the whole "Oooh, Danica's a gurl HOW CAN SHE RACE WHILE SHE'S PUTTIN' ON HER MAKEUP HA HA HA" nonsense by now. The big question at this point is whether she actually can race in the first place, and the consensus still seems to be that while she has SOME talent, she's got a long way to go before she's able to hang at the highest level. Could she at some day? Sure, and she's getting every chance to prove herself. But if she fails, it's not going to be because of some grand conspiracy. Danica brings in tons of new money to NASCAR, and for that reason, she'll be around as long as she wants to be.

___________________

I've convinced myself that the racing would be better if NASCAR could find a way to get the cars to sit off the track a couple inches. Let the air underneath the car. This would lower cornering speeds and maybe just maybe get rid of the aero advantage of being out front. Just a thought.

? Hobo Joe

Like most media members, I was an English major in college, so I'm not even going to pretend I have a working knowledge of aerodynamics and automotive engineering. But, yes, the virtues of clean air for drivers tend to make for the most boring races imaginable. The trick, of course, isn't technological, it's moral: just how much manipulation of the engineering should you do to force competition? Anything that frees up standards, I'm all for, because that rewards engineering genius, but then that gives us the very real possibility that somebody will figure out something that wins them ten straight races.

___________________

As talented as Kyle and Kurt Busch are, both these guys have still got some learning to do with handling interviews and questions. As we saw at Richmond, it appears whatever niceties Kyle is handing out are because he is being watched closely and "coached." As for Kurt, his comment about being back on a "quality" team doesn't give him points for appreciating all Finch went thru for him over the past few months. A big "thank you for giving me a chance, and I wish your team the best in the future" would have gone a lot further with everyone. I wonder if it sent a chill through the Furniture Row people as a clue to what they may still have to deal with?

? Joyce Keith

We could psychoanalyze all afternoon about why it is that these guys seem to have so much trouble with the media, but what's indisputable is that, more often than not, they create their own problems. Kyle can't be surprised that no one wants to talk to him if he's given them gritted-teeth, just-doing-this-'cause-I-have-to interview quote-bits.

Kurt's a bit more problematic. The guy seems hell-bent on burning every bridge, often while he's still standing on it. He's a fascinating character study, but yes, you have to know exactly what you're in for when you bring him onto your team. But it sure is fun for us to watch.

____________________

I might actually be the only NASCAR fan in all of NYC. No, really. I don't think I've ever met another NASCAR fan in the whole city. The first race I ever watched was the 2001 Daytona 500. Seeing DJ urge on Mikey in the last lap totally hooked me. (When I heard later that some guy died in the last lap crash I was sad for him, but didn't get the implications or impact that would have on the sport.) I've been a Waltrip fan ever since. It's been a fun year with two wins and two in the Chase. Go 15, 55, 56!

? John C
Huntington NY

I think we have a couple other NASCAR fans in NYC, but yeah, it's always funny seeing NASCAR try to edge its way into the Big Apple. They used to run the cars through the concrete canyons of Manhattan, you'll recall. Now, if that happened anywhere south of Washington, D.C., you'd have crowds losing their minds and glomming onto every driver wherever they walked. But in New York? If any of those surly Yanks even looked up from reading the latest "Headless Body in Topless Bar" story in the Post, they'd just snarl, "Hey! I'm walkin' here, country boy! Take your fancy-colored cars and get the [censored] outta my city! Go Jeter!"

Anyway, keep the faith, John.

___________________

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but I loathe road course races. If cars aren't screaming at 175-200 MPH, it's a snooze fest for me. Maybe this is why NASCAR won't use road course tracks in the Chase. They assume it's an automatic tune out for the fans who want speed. What's that famous line in Top Gun...? Oh yeah, "I feel the need... the need for speed!"

? Robert B.
Mesquite, TX

Yeah, but that doesn't explain why Martinsville is in the Chase. I don't like Martinsville for the exact same reasons. To re-use my same comparison, to me it's like watching 43 cars look for a parking space at the mall at Christmas. Road courses, I get it: they can be the same way for some people. Personally, I dig 'em; seeing familiar cars shoot up over hillsides and diving into turns is a pleasant change of pace, like hockey's outdoor Winter Classic. Until we actually have a road course on an actual road, though, I won't be satisfied.

Finally, today in spam ...

BMW 3 Series Prepared By AC Schnitzer

We have before us the last work of AC Schnitzer, a renowned German trainer. It has taken its hero the BMW 3 Series and introduced a package composed of both aesthetic and mechanical changes. Come on, a house brand preparation Schnitzer fledged. Aesthetically, this preparation certainly stands by new front and rear spoilers which the [...]

Happy Hour: So, what about this whole Kurt Busch thing?

Welcome to the latest Happy Hour mailbag! You know how these work: You write us with your best rant/ joke/one-liner at happyhournascar@yahoogroups.com or on Twitter at @jaybusbee, we respond to your messages, everyone goes away with a smile on their face. Let's get to it, shall we?

Hey Busbee -- you're an idiot. Also, what do you think of what Kurt Busch did on Sunday?

? Jay Busbee
Atlanta, GA

What a witty letter, and I'm sure the writer is devilishly handsome. All right, I cheated a bit and sent myself a letter on this topic, 'cause I'm sorry, but we've already covered the whole Talladega mess ad infinitum and nobody sent me a letter suitable for printing on the KuBu situation.

Anyway, at this point I almost feel sorry for Busch. Almost. I mean, he must be thinking that there's absolutely nothing that he can do that won't be misinterpreted and twisted. Problem is, he still does things that don't even need to be misinterpreted or twisted to look bad, like driving away from safety officials without your helmet on. But Busch hides behind irrelevant phrases like "my competitive fire," trying to tie himself to old-school (to use one of his pet phrases) NASCAR style when, in fact, he's just being a jerk.

Somebody needs to sit Busch down, somebody that he respects, and tell him: the days of acting however he wants without consequences are over. Yes, the rules are different for him now. He gets more media scrutiny, and less rope, than any other driver on the circuit. And the opportunities he's had to make things better, he's squandered, time and time and time again.

Here's the problem: Busch's actions have veered from his words so many times that we don't believe anything he says or does anymore. Example: I was in the press scrum surrounding Busch at Talladega on Sunday. (That's my hand and iPhone there at center left. I was trying to show Kurt the level I'd just reached on Angry Birds Space.) You can't ever know the truth of a guy's mind, but his farewell-hug-tour of his team seemed premeditated and choreographed just for the cameras. Maybe it wasn't, but we immediately suspect it was ... and that's a real problem for Busch going forward.

Hey, I want Kurt Busch in NASCAR, and I want him on a good team. The sport could use more strong personalities like his, and I'm fully aware that strong personalities don't always run exactly the way you want them to. But enough with the blame-everybody-else routine, enough with the self-professed innocence. New team, new chance to create a new image for himself. Good luck ? serious, not sarcastic ? to both Kurt and Furniture Row.

Your story "Dega delivers..." sounds like you are crediting the fans for the restrictor plate. What gives? Fans don't favor having the plates, never did ... don't blame the fans! Fans don't like to see such big, catastrophic wrecks. If you ask me they should shut down Talladega, period. Or build a nice road course track in the infield.

? Mike Williams
Adin, CA

I didn't blame the fans, I simply said their safety was the reason for the change. Like motorcycle helmets and two-beer-per-customer limits at ballgames, it's a way of protecting fans from their own worst instincts. But oh, were there a variety of opinions on this Talladega issue ...

___________________

I can't speak for all of us, but I can say among the fans I know, no one watched for or enjoyed the pile-up at Talladega. I'm thinking that "meme" is something akin to unicorns, yeti, and Nessie - a legend. Without question, we're drawn to watch wrecks, and to some extent, they're a part of racing. Yet when a single accident removes 25 cars, something is ghastly wrong. This isn't demolition derby.

? BigAlNC

This gives me a chance to run one of my favorite videos: the 1960 Daytona 500. Check out the back-in-the-day racing, or fast-forward to the 1:50 mark for a wreck that makes Sunday at Talladega look like a parking-lot fender-bender:

____________________

Plate racing is not racing, every driver says so. Even the great Earnhardt Sr. said as much many times. When drivers can go into a race knowing they have no control of their finishing position, knowing their team has no control over the finishing position, it is not racing.

? Christopher Sanford

The luck factor is a huge problem with Talladega, I grant you that. But was it really bad racing? Other opinions differ ...

___________________

It was unfortunate that the raced ended in a wreck. However, it was the best race of the season. There were over 30 cars on the lead lap, the winner could have been any of 12 to 15 cars, and the winner was not determined until the end. This is racing, as opposed to the typical boring Sunday drive about when you have less than 10 cars on the lead lap and the winning car was determined after a few laps ... If Sunday's quality of racing continues I will return. I hope NASCAR does something to bring real car racing to all of the tracks so I can become an avid NASCAR fan again.

? RobertJHonold

Restrictor plates at all tracks? Make it so! Anyway, what this race (and my email inbox) showed is that no matter how much we all want to believe our version of what constitutes a good and a bad race, the truth is, there's absolutely no consensus, and there never will be.

____________________

Why does Tony Stewart get 22nd-place points when he caused everyone to wreck? What an [body part]. He should get the worst points placement of anyone else on the lead lap in the wreck caused by him. Can you imagine if anyone named Busch would have caused that wreck?

? Old School

Yeah, Tony pretty much skated on that wreck; if anyone else had been involved in it, he'd have ripped them a new [body part]. But no, of course he shouldn't be penalized overmuch, and he shouldn't be paying for anyone else's damage (another popular criticism). This is racing, and it happens. You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have the facts of 'Dega.

How does NASCAR determine where each car finished in a wreck like this? I thought the field is frozen upon signal of the yellow flag. Being a Dale Jr fan, that should have put him around 6 or 7, but he ended up 20th.

? Joe G.
Jacksonville, FL

It's not as simple as freezing the field; NASCAR judged it based on each car's ability to blend back into a theoretical pack. Freezing the field at the moment of caution would have had Stewart in about fourth or fifth, and he was upside down at the time. NASCAR makes a judgment call on where cars should be able to blend back together, not on their exact position on track.

I love that the roots of NASCAR were formed in running 'shine, and there's no way Junior Johnson got away from the revenuers just turning left. Give me a track where these guys are driving like someone is on their tails over a 180 mph parade any day.

? Oscar Hopper
Phoenix

Hell, give me a track where someone IS on their tails. Hide contraband in one car and call the cops, Talladega Nights-style. Driving for your freedom is a lot more inspiring than driving for a snack-food sponsor, am I right?

____________________

I'm just curious, when you recently wrote that Bowyer "is the epitome of what the world expects a NASCAR driver to be," what exactly did you mean ?

? Joe

Did I say that? Yeah, I probably did, what with the use of the word "epitome" and all. Pretentious jerk. Anyway, it was a compliment. Bowyer's an affable dude with a leathery look and an accent that would frighten people on both coasts. Combine those, and you've got your perfect NASCAR driver for non-NASCAR fans.

Regarding Talladega's race attendance on Sunday, one article mentioned: "The main culprit, NASCAR and track officials have said, is the global economic downturn that started in the fall of 2008." Does this mean the infield previously included a contingent of thousands of drunk Europeans and Asians?

The article also mentioned the race competes with college and pro football...though the article failed to mention Coach Satan's team [that would be Alabama; I hope I didn't need to explain that -JB] did not play this past weekend (and, I imagine, Auburn fans might complain that their team did not play this past weekend, either).

? W Connor
NO, LA

This year, for the first time ever, I drove straight from the highway all the way into the track, and that NEVER happens. I wasn't even that early, either. Attendance is a problem that's becoming more serious by the weekend, and NASCAR's going to have to face some hard truths very soon.

And, yeah, the global economy plays a role ... Greece used to run these junkets from Athens to Talladega, and oh lordy, the parties they'd have in the infield.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. to miss two races after suffering concussion at Talladega

On Sunday afternoon, with the smoke of a two-dozen-car wreck still lingering in the air above Talladega, Dale Earnhardt Jr. sat on the bumper at the end of his hauler, clearly dazed. He shook off questions about his health and proceeded to give a lucid, if pointed, interview about the state of racing at Talladega. He clearly was not in the best condition, but observers attributed it to the shock of being involved in such a major wreck.

The truth, as it turned out, was much worse. On Wednesday, Earnhardt was diagnosed with a concussion. And now, according to Hendrick Motorsports, Earnhardt will sit out the races at Charlotte and Kansas. Regan Smith will drive the #88 in his stead.

This, of course, ends Earnhardt's championship hopes, but that's not the real issue. The issue is that Earnhardt suffered a brain injury despite all the safety improvements now in place in NASCAR. This puts a lie to the idea that drivers are perfectly safe encased in their 21st-century cars, and shines an even harsher light on the true effects of wrecks such as Talladega's "Big Ones."

Here, for reference, is Earnhardt's Talladega interview, immediately post-concussion:

Of note: This is Earnhart's second concussion. He suffered one back in 2002 during a major wreck in California, but hid it from NASCAR and his team for fear of being removed from the car. It's good, for his future, that he came forward on this one. This will end Earnhardt's consecutive Sprint Cup starts streak at 461, the fifth-longest current streak. Ahead of him: Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Jeff Burton and Bobby Labonte.

Also of concern: how many drivers suffer undiagnosed concussions? If a driver can wheel his car back to his hauler, as Earnhardt did on Sunday, he's not required to go to the infield care center for diagnosis. Should drivers be required to undergo testing whether or not their cars are driveable?

The issue of concussions is not a minor one, as any observer of the NFL over the last few years knows. The links between head trauma and quality-of-life concerns, as well as early death, are increasing. NASCAR owes it to its drivers' future to ensure that the on-track racing is as safe as possible.

Other sports require a doctor's examination of a participant to first verify no concussion has occurred, and second to permit return to competition. In boxing and MMA -- which, granted, have a far higher risk of head trauma than a NASCAR driver -- fighters can be kept out of the ring for up to 90 days pending a doctor's approval.

Clearly, the Talladega story is not through yet.
