Petty kicks around options: Ford, Dodge?

Richard Petty Motorsports is about to find itself in the middle of a manufacturer love triangle.

RPM, currently with Ford, is working to extend its contract with the manufacturer and associated connection with Roush Fenway Racing, which ends at the end of the season. But Dodge, with whom Richard Petty has enjoyed a profitable relationship in the past, is currently without a dance partner of its own for the 2013 season and beyond, and could make a push for RPM.

"I would say you'd have to talk to Dodge," Petty said at a press conference. "I don't know [how interested they'd be in RPM]. Right now I think they're pretty confused because they got a plug pulled out of them and wasn't really expecting it. I would imagine they're going to have to sit down and have some prayer meetings to figure out really what they're going to do."

Dodge is without a major-team connection in the sport after this season thanks to Penske Racing's move to Ford in 2013. Finding a Chase-level team to align with could be rough. But, as Petty notes, the opportunity is there for an RPM-Dodge connection.

"Right now we've got our sponsors pretty well lined up for next year, but where we go with the cars and the engines and things like that, we don't really have a plan," he said, adding, "We've got a plan, but I don't know if anyone is going to go along with our plan or not."

In what must surely raise the blood pressure of everyone involved, these sorts of deals often don't get done until the last possible moment. So there is time for plenty of negotiation with both manufacturers ... and plenty of frustration and heartache, too.

"Anything can be done," Petty said. "All it takes is a little bit of time and a whole lot of money."

ARCA driver Mike Affarano flips six times at Talladega

ARCA carnage never seems to cease at Talladega.

Mike Affarano's car flipped over six times and came to rest on its side -- with the engine almost completely dismounted from the car, on lap 83 of Friday's ARCA race at Talladega Superspeedway.

Affarano was thankfully treated and released from the infield care center after the crash.

ARCA is racing's "A" level equivalent if we were comparing stock car racing to Major League Baseball, and its restrictor plate races tend to be dicey affairs with a mix of inexperienced drivers and teams with a wide range of equipment and budgets. Friday's race also featured its own "Big One" multi-car crash in the tri-oval on lap 11.

Brandon McReynolds, son of former Sprint Cup crew chief and current Fox broadcaster Larry McReynolds, won the race with a last lap pass.

Mercedes C63 AMG by HMS Tuning

Before the 2013 Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe burst onto the scene last month, its predecessor, the 2012 C63 AMG Sedan - was a doozy in its own right.

How awesome was it? It gave tuners like HMS Tuning free reign to give it some serious performance and exterior modifications.

Starting with the latter, HMS Tuning gave the C63 AMG a few added goodies, including a redesigned carbon fiber front bumper with integrated LED lights, flared wheel arches, a new boot lid spoiler, and a rear diffuser. All these items, incidentally, are made out of carbon fiber. Rounding out the exterior mods are a new set of 19" Jade R HMS-Edition black rims.

Now, for the performance upgrade. With the C63 AMG already carrying one of the best 6.2-liter V8 engines in the world, the Mercedes sports sedan is capable of belting out 457 horsepower. Now, add a three-stage supercharger kit and you’ve got a variety of increased outputs to choose from. Stage I develops 625 horsepower and 593 lb/ft of torque, Stage 2 produces 640 horsepower and 620 lb/ft of torque, and finally, Stage 3 peaks at 690 horsepower and 646 lb/ft of torque.

Not too bad for the 2012 Mercedes C63 AMG, right?

Talking about pricing, the top-end Stage 3 supercharger kit is priced at a steady ?24,419, which is around $31,700 based on current exchange rates.

Mercedes C63 AMG by HMS Tuning originally appeared on topspeed.com on Friday, 11 May 2012 11:00 EST.

Jimmie Johnson teaches Travis Pastrana how to be a NASCAR champion

Travis Pastrana locked into field for Nationwide debut

Michael Waltrip Racing and RAB Racing announced an alliance on Tuesday that would ensure that motocross and X-Games star Travis Pastrana would be guaranteed a spot into the field for his Nationwide Series debut at Richmond on April 27.

Pastrana was supposed to make his debut last year at Indianapolis, but a broken foot and ankle in an X-Games crash put his first NASCAR Nationwide Series race on hold.

The alliance means that the No. 09 of RAB Racing will now be the No. 99 and will be driven by Pastrana and sponsored by Boost Mobile in all seven of his scheduled Nationwide Series races, and, according to Michael Waltrip, by other MWR drivers in any other races they so choose. RAB Racing had fielded the No. 09 for Kenny Wallace and had been searching for funding. Last week at Texas, Ryan Truex, younger brother of MWR Cup driver Martin Truex Jr., was in the car with sponsorship.

It's a deal that benefits both parties significantly. Pastrana doesn't have to qualify on time for the races he's in, and RAB Racing will have more equipment, less sponsorship to search for and more exposure thanks to Pastrana's presence. It's similar to the agreement that Stewart-Haas and Tommy Baldwin reached before the 20112 season to (hopefully) guarantee Danica Patrick's starting position in the No. 10 for her Cup races in 2012 and for the beginning of the 2013 season. In the Stewart-Haas and Baldwin arrangement, Patrick is in 10 Cup races in SHR equipment, while David Reutimann is in the No. 10 in TBR equipment for the other 26.

Yet, the agreement to give Patrick a locked in starting spot drew much criticism. This deal, so far, hasn't generated near the reaction and scrutiny. It's not an apples to apples comparison ? the Patrick deal involved the owner's points of Baldwin's No. 36, and the equipment deals that each team has limited the true "alliance" aspect ? but at the basic level, they are both the same thing: a team with a highly marketable driver and considerable resources partnering with a smaller one in need of said resources to guarantee that marketable driver's grid position. If you're against one, don't you have to be against the other?

Brad Keselowski adds extra element to two-car tandem and pulls away to win at Talladega

It wasn't a spur of the moment move. It wasn't a move that anyone expected. It was a move that team owner Roger Penske called "pretty amazing." And it was a move that made Brad Keselowski the winner of Sunday's Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega.

Most everyone expected the two-car tandem to be the deciding factor in Sunday's Aaron's 499, just like it was in Saturday's Nationwide Series race. And the common thought was that the driver in second place in that two-car tandem would have the advantage as the finish line approached. Keselowski confirmed the former. But not the latter.

Restarting on the inside of the front row with two laps to go, Keselowski had Kyle Busch (the driver he famously called a rear end in no uncertain terms once in Bristol driver intros) behind him. Race leader Matt Kenseth had his teammate Greg Biffle behind him on the outside line. Just like at Daytona, Kenseth had the dominant car on Sunday. And Just like at Daytona, Biffle couldn't get latched onto Kenseth's bumper in the closing laps. Yes, Kenseth's car might have been too good to win.

Enter Keselowski and Busch, who immediately latched together as Kenseth and Biffle pulled away at the restart. However, once Keselowski and Busch gathered steam while their bumpers were locked, Kenseth, Biffle and the rest of the field were left fighting for third place.

[Video: 'The Big One' claims Jeff Gordon, Carl Edwards among others]

Keselowski led Busch high into turn three on the last lap. He knew that Busch would wait as long as possible to make his move to capitalize on the draft, so he made his move early, diving to the low-side of the banking, breaking contact between his rear bumper and Busch's front fender. Once that contact was broken, Busch's momentum was too, and Keselowski could focus more what was in front of him than was in his rear-view mirror.

"Then Kyle, I just knew the move I wanted to make and made it into three and disconnected us and that was the key right there. Once we got the air bubble in between the two cars, it was going to take two or three laps for him to pop that and we only had to go half a lap, and not quite that."

It was Keselowski's second win of 2012 and second win at Talladega, the first coming in 2009, the first time we'd see the tandem draft work to such extremes in the Sprint Cup Series. That, of course, was when Carl Edwards went flying off of Keselowski's front bumper in the tri-oval. Three years later, this move came from the front, and didn't involve flying sheetmetal.

And because it's Keselowski's second win of the season, it makes him a virtual lock for the Chase if he's not in the top 10 after the season's 26th race. A Sprint Cup Series title is the only thing that's eluded Penske, and he feels that Keselowski is the driver that can deliver it for him.

"He's matured a lot," Penske said of Keselowski. "He's been a tremendous asset to the team. He's not just for Brad Keselowski, he's for Penske Racing. You see that when he comes in the shop and he's spending a lot of time. I wouldn't trade him for anybody right now and you know that."

[Related: Drivers take differing points of view on wreck tally at Talladega]

Keselowski joined Penske late in 2009, and after just over a year in the No. 12 car that resulted in just two top 10s in 39 races, took over the Miller Lite No. 2 in 2011. In that No. 2, he's got five wins in 46 races. As a Wild-Card entrant into last year's Chase, Keselowski was still somewhat of a championship afterthought despite his three wins.

He finished the 2011 season fifth. Now in May of 2012, it'd be crazy to not consider him a prime contender when we get to November.

"He came to me, and we talked about before he went to work for us, he said 'Look, I'd like to come to Penske Racing and help you build a winning Cup team.' He said 'that's my goal,'" Penske said. "And I think he's certainly demonstrating that from his driving ability and the way he's been able to pull together and his chemistry with Paul Wolfe and that whole team has obviously made a difference because this is not just about the driver and the car or the sponsor, it's about the whole team and I think that he's the real package and what we're trying to do is give him everything we can to give him a winner and obviously one of the goals in my life is to sit up on that stage either in New York or Las Vegas sometime and I think he's the guy that can make it happen this year, hopefully."

Power Rankings: Biffle triumphant

It's a new season, and that means a new year of Power Rankings. Each week throughout the season, we'll size up who's rising and who's falling, based on current standings, behind-the-scenes changes, expected staying power, recent history and general gut feelings. It is not scientific, nor is it meant to be. And remember, whoever your favorite driver is, we're biased against him and like someone else better. We continue with a guy who's sticking around the top, like it or not...

1. Greg Biffle: Well, look at that. We drop Biffle to 8th in the Power Rankings, make fun of his name, and he comes back and wins the damn race the next week. I do believe we have the power to dictate races now; drivers, email me if you want me to mock you for a week. It'll pay off. Last week: 8.

2. Jimmie Johnson: Hearing Jimmie Johnson get mad on the radio, as he did on Saturday night, is like hearing your parents cuss. You know they do it, but it still sounds weird and wrong. And the fact that Johnson is that ticked over a second-place finish (and that he's finishing second now) should have everybody else very concerned. Last week: 3.

3. Matt Kenseth. So apparently one of the Best Buys that is shutting down is right next to Kansas next weekend. That's a wee bit awkward. I'm thinking Kenseth won't be doing an appearance at that one. There could be some very unhappy employees there to greet him. Last week: 4.

4. Tony Stewart: I honestly believe that there are two Tony Stewarts: one who's a champion driver and one who just comes and ticks off laps in a competent but not championship fashion. What I want to know is, what's the champion driver doing when the lap-ticker is on the track? I bet that's a lot better story than the other way around. Last week: 1.

5. Dale Earnhardt Jr.: If Junior is disappointed with a top-10 finish, that's a step forward. Credit to the 88 team for trying experiments with their setups at Texas, though I think we can safely say that this particular experiment didn't exactly work out for the best. Last week: 2.

6. Martin Truex Jr.: Won the pole and led quite a few laps, but couldn't quite hold it together against the Roush-Fenway horde this weekend. Still, as with Junior, the fact that you've got multiple MWR cars ranked high in the standings is a very positive sign that the organization is taking steps forward. Dance steps, probably, but still. Last week: 5.

7. Kevin Harvick: So apparently a tire changer dropped a lug nut and then tripped while coming around the back of Harvick's car during one of the early pit stops at Texas. In unrelated news, the No. 29 hauler was spotted making an unscheduled trip back in from the Texas countryside. Last week: 6.

8. Denny Hamlin: Unremarkable week for Hamlin, quite the contrast from last week. There, he caddied for Bubba Watson at Augusta in a little par-3 contest, and then Watson went on to win The Masters. Hey, Hamlin! Get over here and carry my bags, pronto! Last week: 9.

Jeff Gordon9. Jeff Gordon: Amazing that we're barely into mid-April and Gordon and teammate Kasey Kahne are already almost in must-win situations in order to get into the Chase. You can't afford to start slow, friends. Last week: 12.

Clint Bowyer10. Clint Bowyer: Bowyer was the lowest-finishing Michael Waltrip Racing car, and he finished 17th. There was a time, like last year, that 17th would have been the top-finishing MWR car. Oh sweet heaven, that means we have to hear more of Mikey gloating. And nobody needs that. Last week: 11.

11. Ryan Newman: Jimmie Johnson was roundly ticked at Newman for blocking while being a lap down. But then, everybody says that about Newman. I'll bet he's one of those guys who never lets you cut ahead of him on a crowded street. I'd pay money to walk right behind him in downtown Manhattan and watch him wreak havoc. Last week: 7.

Carl Edwards12. Carl Edwards. Hey, welcome back, Carl! Another good-if-not-great week for Edwards, who finished 8th and held up his end of the deal for the Roush-Fenway Texas dynasty. Somewhere, Amanda Beard punched out a waiter in frustration. Last week: NR.

Dropping out: Brad Keselowski. #blownengine #sorrybro

Lucky Dog: Mark Martin. Can't somebody convince this ol' feller to run a full season? Gucci Mane, get on the phone, dawg!

The Kasey Kahne DNF: The guy who throws the yellow flag. He basically got a week off with pay this week. Don't spend it all in one place, fella.

Next up: Kansas! Come up with your best lame Dorothy/Toto jokes, and send your comments to us via Twitter at @jaybusbee, via email by clicking here, and via Facebook. Go!

5-Hour Energy expands sponsorship of Clint Bowyer

KANSAS CITY, Kan. ? Last October at Kansas Speedway, Michael Waltrip Racingannounced that Clint Bowyer would drive the team's third car with sponsorship from 5-Hour Energy for 25 races in 2012.

On Friday at Kansas, the team announced that 5-Hour Energy has increased its investment to 35 races, all but one of the 36 points races. That race will be at Talladega in two weeks when Bowyer drives an Alabama-themed Aaron's car in honor of the Crimson Tide's BCS title.

"We have measured real growth through our retail partnerships, in-market activation, sales growth and brand awareness," 5-Hour Energy president Scott Henderson said in a release. "The numbers show we've exceeded all expectations. This increase allows us to target even more markets. We're business people, and the numbers show NASCAR delivers the audience we need to market our product."

Maybe this will mean a 5-Hour Energy advertisement during every NASCAR commercial break from now until the rest of the season. (Don't worry, it only seems like they're on every segment.)

Given the recent trend of sponsors scaling back the number of races they're involved in, 5-Hour's increase may be a welcome sign that the sponsorship landscape is improving. However, given the ubiquity of the product, it doesn't seem like they're struggling anyway, so time will tell if their increase is a true reflection of the NASCAR economy or an outlier.
