Nissan Friend-Me Concept

Press days for the 2013 New York Auto Show are over, so now it?s time to move our attention to the next show on the docket: Auto Shanghai 2013 set to start on April 20. In the Big Apple, Nissan unveiled the hybrid version for the Nissan Pathfinder and the company will bring an all-new concept car called Friend-ME to China.

All the information we have on the new concept up to this point is a teaser image that reveals an innovative set of headlights and Nissan?s announcement that the new Friend-ME will feature a unique center console that allows "Four Seats, One Mind Connectivity" - equal information sharing among all aboard.

According to Nissan, the new Friend-ME is "designed for the vibrant, young generation in China, one of most exciting segments in the fastest-growing automobile markets in the world."

Alongside the new Friend-ME concept, Nissan will also display 20 new models in Shanghai.

Updated 04/10/2013: Nissan has unveiled today the second teaser image for the Friend-ME Concept that is set to be unveiled at the Auto Shanghai 2013 on April 20th. The first teaser image offered us a glimpse of the car’s headlights, and the image today gives us a peek at the taillights.

Nissan Friend-Me Concept originally appeared on topspeed.com on Wednesday, 10 April 2013 16:15 EST.

Denny Hamlin: Compression fracture in back from Logano crash

Sunday's final-lap wreck with Joey Logano caused significant injury for Denny Hamlin. After Hamlin spent the night in the hospital, his team released the details on his injury: a L1 compression fracture. Following is the statement from Joe Gibbs Racing:

"Hamlin suffered a L1 Compression Fracture following an accident on the final lap of Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway.

"Hamlin hopes to be released today to fly to his home in North Carolina where he will be evaluated by Dr. Jerry Petty of Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates later this week."

NASCAR has an off week this weekend. At present, it is not known if Hamlin will miss any races.

Hamlin and Logano collided on the final lap of the race. Hamlin spun down into the infield and hit a section of the wall that is unprotected by a SAFER barrier. He got out of his car and immediately collapsed to the ground. He complained about back pain and was helicoptered out of the track because of traffic congestion.

On Twitter, Hamlin posted the picture at right with the caption "All good." Earlier Monday morning, he'd written, "I just want to go home."

While it's too early to forecast any kind of prognosis for Hamlin, if he were to miss even one race his championship hopes would take a severe hit. In order for him to get into the Chase on a wild card, he'd need to be in the top 20 in points by the end of the 26th race and win enough races to outdistance the other nine drivers from positions 11-20. After 25 races last year, the distance from first to 20th place was 270 points; in 2011 it was 216 points. Hamlin is already 54 points back, and would need to win at least two to three races this season.

However, a single season isn't the issue here. Hamlin is one of the best drivers in NASCAR, and his long-term health is of paramount concern to Joe Gibbs Racing. The team could be forced to sacrifice this season for Hamlin to remain a viable NASCAR driver for the next two decades.

2013 Aragon World Superbike Friday Round Up: Fast Beats Agile

The second race weekend brings World Superbike to Europe and starts the meaty part of the season. After a quick test for some teams, Aragon welcomes the entire grid. The track is relatively new track near Alcañiz in the Aragon region of Spain. The stand-out feature is the long back straight joined to the start/finish straight by a fiddly hairpin section. It's a circuit that suits bikes with top speeds as overtaking at the end of the long straight puts a faster bike over the line before a slower, more agile bike. If you're on an Aprilia, BMW or Tom Sykes's Kawasaki, you are in with a chance of a win. The long back straight was also the home of one of last year's more memorable and unusual overtakes, with Supersport contenders Kenan Sofuoglu and Fabien Foret meeting down the back straight with Sofuoglu trying to headbutt Foret as he passed him.

Jeff Gordon suffers tire failure while leading and collects Matt Kenseth

Jeff Gordon's rough start to 2013 looked poised to turn around on Sunday at Bristol until a melted bead on his right front tire eliminated Gordon's chances for the win. And unfortunately for Matt Kenseth, it ended his too.

Gordon was leading the race on lap 391 and dove to the bottom line of turns 3 and 4 to pass a lapped car. But before he had the chance to make the pass, his right front tire failed and Gordon's car made a sharp right hand turn into the outside wall.

Second-place Kenseth was just behind Gordon, but unlike Gordon, he took the high line into turn three. That meant that he had nowhere to go when Gordon's car went careening in front of him and as Gordon smashed the wall, Kenseth rammed into the back of Gordon's car. Both drivers' days were done. Gordon ended up 34th. Kenseth was 35th.

Last year at Bristol, a tire doomed Gordon's hopes as well, though that issue was spurred by contact with teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. Last year, Gordon left Bristol in 23rd in the points standings. This year, he's 21st, 76 points behind Brad Keselowski. After the crash, Kenseth fell to 13th in the standings.

Happy Hour: Coming to Denny?s defense

New season, new Happy Hour! You know the drill. Throughout the week you can send us your best questions, jokes, rants and just plain miscellaneous thoughts to happyhourmailbag@yahoo.com or @NickBromberg. We'll post them here, have a good time and everyone's happy. Right? Oh who are we kidding, this is NASCAR. No one is ever happy.

We're three for three so far with overriding themes and you can guess what the topic of discussion was this week. Given the reaction, you have to wonder how many new fans Denny Hamlin has picked up over the last seven days?
This is America. We Do have free speech. This is a new low for NASCAR. Long-time fans like me want to hear and see more of the driver's personality not just the prepared media version. Denny Hamlin has a right to be outraged and is afraid to say what he feels because the sanctioning body seems to be more powerful than the constitution of the United States! I guess this weekend I'll watch golf.
- Fred

After being a Nascar race fan for 40+ years, this Year is the most disappointing yet. After kicking out the nationwide driver Clements for saying something maybe out of line and to my understand of what was said !!WOW!! don?t turn on SHOWTIME - ?Inside Nascar? for the in car recordings of the drivers and crew chiefs...... Now NASCAR fining Denny Hamlin for expressing the truth about there so called new car.The racing this year has been boring to say the very least...... the cars play follow the leader. Gas mileage races are a big joke, drivers turning the engine on and off is just plain silly. Owners spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to go fast, so the fast car should win.Not the one that gets 20 mpg.....the moral to the story is maybe Nascar should do there job and keep the cars and parts out of the grandstands. Along with many other things they cannot do that either.Ask the 30 people that were injured at Daytona. I'm going to Bristol and Richmond only because we got the tickets LAST YEAR and I must enjoy been gouged by the motels as I have brought it to the attention of Bristol Motor Speedway and I see there has been no changes to the motel bookings for this year.
Sorry to SAY this is the end of this Nascar fan. ITS OVER
-Kibler's Garage

Just read the article re: Hamster's fine for his comments. Question; was (Kyle Busch) ever fined for his comments after he won Bristol with the COT/Gen-5 car? If not, then NASCAR is way out of bounds on this because if they're going to fine Denny, they should've fined Kyle then.
- Andy Z.

[Related: Denny Hamlin won't appeal $25K fine]

What is NASCAR thinking?? Denny?s comments were very forthright and factual. They didn?t seem to hate on the new car, just pointed out that it would take time for teams to figure it out which would be frustrating to any driver. But NASCAR fining him $25 Grand for on observation is chicken crap!! If you recall, when KB won the first race with the C.O.T. his comment after winning the race was that he hated the car and they pretty much sucked. The next year KB won 8 races in that car!!
- Kevin

First off, I'm not sure that we can say with any certainty that Busch wasn't fined for what he said about the COT. After all, we've just entered a new era of fine transparency in NASCAR. For all we know, Joe Nemechek could have a racked up a fine bill of hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years. (No, probably not. We love you, Joe.)

While NASCAR may realize that they've overreached in this instance, they're now in a position that they're likely not going to overreach again. Why? Because who the heck is going to speak truthfully about any negatives when it comes to the new car or the quality of racing in the future? This was essentially a pre-emptive strike to scare off anyone thinking of a threat. Will it work? I hope not. But I fear so.

So I'm that rarest of creatures: The liberal NASCAR fan. Worse, it's not like I was raised in NASCAR country and later realized I was liberal. Nope, I live in LA, work in entertainment, and like NASCAR.

It's a lonely existence. After the 2011 championship race, I had no one at work to gush to. Worse, I've taken all kinds of abuse from co-workers, some of it outright venemous (and unprofessional), although most of it is just talking trash. But it's truly been a lesson in the culture wars in this country. Co-workers don't mock the Brit next to me who follows Formula 1, because that's "exotic." They do take cheap shots at me, though, because NASCAR because it's filled with rednecks. Nothing to do with racing itself, just pure dislike for the fly-over states.

So here I've been, explaining how NASCAR *isn't* just a bunch of redneck idiots, and then the NRA 500 comes along. What the hell am I supposed to do with that? I mean, I can't think of convincing argument to the charge "It's a bunch of gun-loving rednecks," at least not until there's a Planned Parenthood 500.

Then again, maybe NASCAR doesn't care. Maybe they are more concerned about the other thing lurking around the bend: The fact that I (and a bunch of other people) just cancelled cable. And, honestly, this NRA thing makes me feel a lot less guilty about it.
-Andy W.

Andy, I think there are a lot more of you than you realize. And I hate to break it to you, the race is on Fox.

That was some of the "finest" racing I've seen all year.

I don't think I would put out the Warped Wednesday rush to judgment map out for real just yet when it comes to the racing. We've had three races at three distinctly different types of tracks. There was bound to be a feeling out process with this car, and for better or worse, we're right now in that phase. How long will it be? That's the question. For NASCAR's sake given all of the hype, the racing quality needs to be distinctly different pretty damn soon unless they want to deal with a lot of negative feedback... without the slightest hint of any potential driver instigation.

Warped Wednesday: Penalties should be coming for Jimmie Johnson?s revelation

Welcome to Warped Wednesday. On this, we'll put out the rush to judgment mat, go a little too far and have a little fun. Will it be funny? Sometimes. Will it be crazy and largely unbelievable? Probably. Will not everyone get it? Definitely. Though this week? Seems lots of folks find our topic all too believable.

It's common knowledge among many in the outer-circle that NASCAR allows Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus to cheat and does everything in its power to allow them to win, but Johnson's admission on Monday of those facts is absolutely abhorrent.

Much like a secret fine should stay secret, a secret mandate should also stay secret. Many times NASCAR has been likened to the WWE because of the preponderance of scripts in both disciplines. However, it's necessary to note that the WWE knows you know it's fixed. NASCAR does not.

It's important to maintain the impression of fair and balanced, much like a certain cable news network, so that the series can position itself as a serious sport. Why would a multi-million dollar company enter NASCAR if it knew that Johnson and Lowe's were being handed the championship every year? Think of those ramifications for other teams. By admitting what many NASCAR fans are convinced of, Johnson is endangering the careers of many within racing.

He is already in hot water with NASCAR for dropping the championship opportunity that NASCAR gave him last season. 2011 went as planned; Johnson can't win the title every season, lest NASCAR risk the secret getting out even more. Usually, the scripts are ensured to work given NASCAR's "48 special" templates that tweak at the push of a button when the 48 rolls up to the inspection bay. But a cheated up car can't overcome a cut tire.

That tire failure at Phoenix was like the star performer of a play coming down with strep throat two hours before the show premiere. The sanctioning body didn't have enough time to recover and was forced to go with Brad Keselowski as its champion.

The pass of Dale Earnhardt Jr. while he was sitting there after his spin? That was all part of the cleverly designed heel turn as well. NASCAR knows that the only thing that sells more tickets or gets more victories than a Junior win is a Johnson win combined with a diss of the "sport's" most popular driver. And besides, Junior being at the top of the points standings for an extended period of time is too much of a cruel thing to do to a fanbase, as NASCAR is patterning his career after Ted DiBiase's.

NASCAR knows that it's secret will get out at some point in the future. They just weren't banking on it being this year, the year of the heralded and miracle healing Gen-6 car. If Denny Hamlin's comments about that car were worth a fine for disparaging the sport, I can only imagine the discussions that NASCAR executives are having right now about Johnson's tweet. Will it be a seven-figure fine? A multiple-race suspension? Or will it be nothing at all, with NASCAR choosing rather to play it off as a tongue-in-cheek comment that doesn't merit a response?

We're about to find out.

Man?s NASCAR headstone banned by church; widow sues

Fair warning, you may have to scrap those NASCAR-themed tombstone plans depending on your body's future place of rest's regulations.

(AP)

Jason Carr died in a 2009 car crash and his wife Shannon spent nearly $10,000 on a custom headstone in the shape of a couch featuring the NASCAR logo, the logo of the Indianapolis Colts and a deer and a dog. However, the couple's church said it didn't meet the specifications of its cemetery and therefore wouldn't be allowed as his grave marker.

[Also: NASCAR Power Rankings: More of the same from Brad Keselowski]

Shannon Carr is now suing. From the AP:

The Rev. Jonathan Meyer, priest at St. Joseph Catholic Church, notified the monument maker that the headstone didn't meet the cemetery's standards and couldn't be placed in the church's century-old graveyard, The Republic reported. But Carr says in her lawsuit that the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis Properties Inc., which owns the cemetery, never produced any regulations for the plot until more than a year after she tried to have the headstone installed in 2010.

Meyer says that the church knew about the plans for the headstone six weeks before Carr purchased it and that she was informed of the decision not to allow it in the cemetery and was encouraged to not purchase it. However, he did say that the regulations weren't formally official until after Carr purchased the headstone. The archdiocese of Indianapolis says that issue is out of the court's jurisdiction as it doesn't fall within the bounds of the first amendment.

And Meyer also took a dig at Carr's decision to purchase the tombstone. "Our culture breaks all the rules to make people feel good," he said. "Faithful Christians know rules and regulations are set up so there can be good for everyone."
