Very cool? half an F1 car

Sauber has come up with a great idea: cutting a Formula 1 in half from one end to the other. There is a lot to learn! Check it out here…

Float sinks?

So the flotation is delayed, and – whisper it – perhaps off. I say that because the last attempted float back in the 1990s was also initially billed as a delay but the money-minded then went off on a hunt for bond issues instead. That could happen again. The non- float may not be good [...]

Perez revels in success

Fernando Alonso raced home to clinch first place in the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday, but you might argue that for all his joy at winning, there might have been someone just slightly happier at Sepang that day. Step forward Sergio Perez. The Mexican might not be a household name just yet but, aged 22, [...]

Joey Logano ushers in a new era of awesome firesuits

Joey Logano's firesuit touting the arrival of a new Hitman video game (Hitman: Absolution) is simply magnificent. Logano sported this natty beauty for Saturday's Nationwide race, where he won the pole and would go on to finish sixth.

We hope this entices other sponsors to take some chances with firesuits. Can you imagine Jimmie Johnson in a Captain America suit? (I know, redundant.) We need to suit up our favorite drivers in the best upcoming movie costumes. And Halloween? Forget it. Make this happen, NASCAR sponsors. And roll with it, drivers. Or we'll send Joey to talk with you.

Stop, collaborate and listen: Vanilla Ice will drive the pace car at Pocono

Vanilla Ice will be driving the pace car at Pocono. That's it, end of story.

What, you want more? First off, play the video above. Listen to it. Watch it. REVEL in it. That's the ultimate in '80s cheese, my friends, the last gasp of soulless neon white-boy hip-hop. If you listen closely, you can hear the freight train that is Nirvana bearing right down on Mr. Ice. Anyway, against all odds, Ice has remained working, and he's got a gig in the upcoming Adam Sandler movie "That's My Boy." (Whether that constitutes a step up or a step down from "Ice Ice Baby" is up to you.)

If you want, you can bid on a pace-car ride with fans in his Mustang 5.0. Check out NASCAR.Com/unites for more info. See if he'll let you choose what to put on the radio as you drive.

Dario Franchitti on Dan Wheldon, Danica Patrick and the allure of the Indy 500

The Indy 500 is on the horizon, and Dario Franchitti is speaking on many a topic. First, he spoke of how hard it is being without Dan Wheldon, who died in Las Vegas last year.

Next, he speaks of Danica Patrick, and how IndyCar will survive without her (spoiler: it'll do just fine):

Finally, what would he do for another Indy 500 win? He'd give an awful lot:

The Indy 500 rolls on Sunday afternoon. Kick back and enjoy a fine day of racing, all day long.

The Andretti curse continues at Indy as Marco Andretti crashes out of 500

Entering Sunday's Indianapolis 500, Marco Andretti said he was confident. Really confident.

He qualified fourth and had one of the fastest cars consistently throughout the two weeks of Indianapolis 500 preparations. Two very good reasons for that confidence. He was so confident that on Friday he said that he felt it was his team's race to lose.

Unfortunately for the Andretti family, "race" and "lose" have been associated all too often with the Indianapolis 500 since 1969, the only year that Mario Andretti, Marco's grandfather, won the famed race.

On Sunday, Marco was looking like a soothsayer. He cruised to the lead shortly after the drop of the green flag and stayed there for the first half of the race, leading a race-high 59 laps. At the midpoint of the race, a caution flag flew for Ana Beatriz's crash just a few laps after Andretti had made a green-flag pit stop. His team called him into the pits again. Andretti never got back to the front of the field.

[Related: Brooklyn Decker, Danica Patrick hang out before Coca-Cola 600]

Racing for eighth place with 12 laps to go, Andretti made a move to the inside of Turn 1 and his left-side tires got under the white line, sending his car careening into the outside wall between Turns 1 and 2. The race had officially been lost. The Andretti curse continued.

In all honesty, it was probably over after that yellow-flag pit stop, which put Andretti and his Chevrolet back in traffic after many cars in the top 10 stayed out. (Hondas were getting consistently better fuel mileage than the Chevys all afternoon.)

Marco, who has never been monotone on his in-car radio, was unhappy with the decision to pit. After pitting under green on his next stop, claiming that his tires were down to the cords, Andretti was caught a lap down after the yellow flag flew for Sebastian Saavedra just a lap after his pit stop. While Andretti got back on the lead lap as pit stops cycled through under caution, he was back in 17th place with 48 laps to go.

Since 1969, Mario, Michael or Marco Andretti have a combined 47 Indianapolis 500 starts, all without a win. The race at the Brickyard has cruelly teased the Andretti family over those 40 years in myriad ways ? they've DNFed 29 times.

In 1992, Michael Andretti saw his fuel pressure go away while leading with 11 laps to go. Michael led 160 of the 189 laps he completed that day, but the battle for the win was decided by Al Unser Jr. and Scott Goodyear.

The year before, Michael led 97 laps. He finished second.

In 1987, Mario started on the pole and dominated, leading 170 laps. But ignition issues sidelined him with 20 laps to go. Yes, he led all but 10 of the laps he completed.

In 2006, Marco added his chapter to the Andretti struggles. After not leading all day, he found himself at the front as the white flag waved with Sam Hornish Jr. in hot pursuit. Hornish, perhaps learning from Goodyear's failed attempt 14 years earlier, slingshotted around Andretti as the two cars barreled out of Turn 4 on the final lap and crossed the finish line first.

After that 29th DNF on Sunday, the curse still lingers. And the question does too: Will next year be the year the book is closed on the Andrettis' winless streak at Indy? Or will another chapter be written?

The 200 wins of Rick Hendrick, by the numbers

On Saturday night, a Hendrick Motorsports driver, fella by the name of Jimmie Johnson, won the team's 200th victory in 3,015 races. Let's dig a little deeper courtesy of Racing Reference, shall we?

? Hendrick's first victory came in April 1984 at Martinsville. The winner? Geoff Bodine.

His first sponsor was Northwestern Mutual Life, and his team was then known as All-Star Racing. Yeah, nice name.

? The winningest driver for Hendrick is, of course, Jeff Gordon with 85 wins. Hendrick has also fielded cars driven by legends (Darrell Waltrip, Al Unser Jr.), dearly departed (Tim Richmond, Rob Moroso, Benny Parsons) to who-the-hell-is...? (Sarel van der Merwe).

? Hendrick has won 10 championships: five by Jimmie Johnson, four by Gordon and one by Terry Labonte.

? The team now trails only Richard Petty Motorsports, with 268 wins, but at Hendrick's current pace, that record could fall within a decade.

? The drivers bearing Hendrick regalia have 818 top-5s, 1,352 top-10s, and 181 poles. They've earned a tidy $272 million in race purses over the team's 29-plus years of existence.

? Hendrick's best track? The aforementioned Martinsville, where his drivers have won 18 times in 178 races, followed by Charlotte (16) and Darlington (14). He's had the most trouble at Homestead, where his drivers have failed to bring home a checker in 51 races, and Kentucky, which just joined the schedule last year.

Sadly, Martinsville is also the site of Hendrick's greatest tragedy, the plane crash in October 2004 that killed Rick's son Ricky and several other members of the Hendrick organization. Saturday night, in a touching final gesture, the assembled Hendrick team turned their hats backwards and pointed to the sky, a tribute to Ricky Hendrick and the others lost to tragedy over the years:

Eric McClure speaks on his scary Talladega wreck

One week after a terrifying wreck at Talladega that could have ended so much worse, Eric McClure made a public appearance at Darlington to talk about the injury, NASCAR's response, and his plans to race again.

In the wreck that came in the closing laps of the Talladega Nationwide race, McClure appeared to drive straight into the inside wall. He suffered a concussion and mild (relatively speaking) internal injuries. While McClure only remembers "bits and pieces" of the time during and after the wreck, he did recall that his brakes were gone as he tried to stop:

"I hit the brakes when I saw the smoke, and they just weren't there," he said. "It was a little bit of a heart-sinking feeling. It created the impression that I was speeding up or going faster than everyone when I hit, which obviously I was."

The brakes-are-out phenomenon has cost many a driver their lives, so it's good news that the safety cage, the head restraint and the walls held strong. Inspections of McClure's car later found that the car itself was intact, though the steering wheel had broken off.

McClure has four daughters, ranging in age from two months to five years, and he noted that having them at the track (though not witnessing the accident) added a layer of heartache to the day.

"There were some times with family when everything died down that made me understand how lucky I was and thankful I had a family like that," he said. "This week has been good. The 3-year-old brought stethoscopes in and said she'd make my heart better and try to rub the bruises. They've been really sweet."

As for his future? "I live to race," he said. "Sometimes I question how good I am, but I never had a doubt about it." He said he will return to the track once he's cleared by NASCAR, though there is as yet no timetable for his return.

One positive note: McClure noted that Mario Andretti had called him "one tough dude" on Twitter. Any time you can get Mario to say that, you've done something ... if not necessarily something you'd want to do again.
