Fans injured at conclusion of Nationwide race at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? At least 28 fans sustained injuries, two critically, when parts of Kyle Larson's car flew into the stands at the conclusion of Saturday's Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway. One of the critically injured fans suffered a "life-threatening" head injury and the other is a child according to a spokesman at Halifax Medical Center.

Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood said that 14 people were transported to hospitals from the track and another 14 were treated at the track's onsite care center.

A track worker told Yahoo! Sports that one woman had a tourniquet on her leg, others suffered burns and a tire landed on one fan when a multiple-car accident unfolded as drivers raced for the finish line in the final lap of the Drive4COPD 300.

Tony Stewart missed the pileup and won the race as Larson's car was propelled into the catchfence separating the track from the grandstands on the Daytona International Speedway trioval.

The crash was triggered when leader Regan Smith was turned via contact from Brad Keselowski, who was pushing him. Much like many crashes that have happened in the front of the field at Daytona, the wreck was unavoidable for many behind and Larson's car was catapulted into the catchfence after he was tagged from behind. The impact with the catchfence sheared the entire front off of Larson's car and also tore a hole in the fence. His engine and a tire ended up lodged in the catchfence with the other tire nine rows up in the grandstands. When Larson's car came to rest in the infield, the entire section of the car in front of the cockpit was missing.

After the crash, spectators were being treated in the grandstands for injuries from debris from the crash. We will update the post when more information becomes available. Larson was evaluated and released from the infield care center after he climbed from his car. Following the race, NASCAR President Mike Helton joined ESPN in the booth.

"I think to see and explain what we know right now is there obviously was some intrusion into the fence, and fortunately with the way the event's equipped up, there was plenty of emergency workers ready to go. They all jumped in on it pretty quickly," Helton said.

"Right now it's a function of trying to determine of what all damage is done. They're moving folks as we've seen to care centers and taking some folks over to Halifax Medical Center. We'll be able to update you later on, but all we know is everybody is working hard on what all happened."

To get in position to win, Stewart made an aggressive move on the backstretch on the final lap to move from the inside lane to the outside with Sam Hornish pushing him and the two made up ground on Smith and Keselowski in turns 3 and 4. As Smith's car spun around, Stewart darted to the inside and avoided both drivers to take the win.

Earlier in the race, another multi-car accident erupted. It involved Michael Annett, who was taken to an area hospital. He was awake, alert and undergoing tests, according to NASCAR.

2013 World Superbike Calendar Finalized, Silverstone, Portimao and Imola Confirmed, Istanbul Added

After already having staged the first race, the World Superbike calendar has finally been updated and lost its provisional status. Today, the FIM issued an official, finalized version of the 2013 World Superbike calendar, confirming the changes we reported on yesterday.

The Silverstone race has been confirmed, and the Subject To Contract status has been removed from the Portimao and Imola rounds. The round originally scheduled for June 23rd has been scrapped, and a new round scheduled for Istanbul Park on September 15th. The replacement of Istanbul Park for the 23rd June round, for which Brno had originally been penciled in, means that the Superstock calendar is reduced by one round, from 10 races to just 9, while the World Superbike calendar now has 15 rounds planned, including two races in the UK, at Donington and Silverstone, and a trip across the Atlantic to Laguna Seca.

Below is the official press release issued by the FIM containing the updated and finalized calendar:

Power Rankings: The Empire Strikes Back

A new year means a new set of Power Rankings! After every race, we'll opine about who we think is at the top of the Sprint Cup heap and how and why they got there. Remember, this isn't scientific, as our formula is the perfect blend of analytics and bias against your favorite driver. So let's get on with it, shall we?

1. Jimmie Johnson. Well hello there, Mr. Vader. Have you ever been to the top before? It's quite nice, isn't it? Have a seat right there, we'll take you on a tour. That was some power move by JJ on the race's final restart, you guys. He was fortunate enough to be leading at the time the caution flag flew so that he had lane choice with six to go and held off the rest of the field. Side note: with the evidence that Johnson and team filed a "Harlem Shake" video on the Daytona infield after the race, it raises an important question: Will NASCAR ever NOT beat a pop culture trend into the ground long after the fad has passed?

2. Danica Patrick. OHMYGODWHYDIDYOUPUTHERHEREHOWCOULDYOU? YOUAREJUSTDOINGTHISFORPAGEVIEWSAREN'TYOU? Look, if you watched the race on Sunday and you were putting these rankings together, you'd be a fool to leave Patrick out after the race she ran. And had she not been freight-trained by Dale Earnhardt Jr. on the final lap, she'd be no lower than third on everybody's boards. Besides, it's not like she's going to be in here in a month or so, right? Right?

3. Brad Keselowski. Speaking of power moves, what kind of message would that have sent had Keselowski held off the field for the final 20 laps with not only a taped up car, but one that had suffered significant trackbar damage to boot? Side note v2: What does Keselowski think of Instagram now that we know Chad Knaus has recently taken an interest in it?

4. Dale Earnhardt Jr. If the man had another lap... Instead, this was the first Daytona 500 in four races that didn't go to extra laps and Junior nabbed his third second place finish in those four races. The low line's lack of momentum off the corners doomed Junior off turn four on the final lap, but anyone who doubted his restrictor plate prowess can't do so anymore after watching that move down the backstretch on the final lap.

5. Mark Martin. Nice move to go with Junior there on the final lap for the 54 year-old driver of the No. 55. After the race, Mark glowed about how truly grateful he was for the opportunity to drive for Michael Waltrip Racing and work with the team. Which is also what he said after every race last season.

6. Greg Biffle. Second year, second place on the second-to-last lap, second time he didn't finish second. One of the things we were sure about going in to Sunday's race was that the second place car would have to make a move long before the finish line. Biffle never got close enough to Johnson to make that move and by the time the field was in turn three for the final time, the imperative switched from catching Johnson to fending off the field.

7. Ryan Newman. On Friday, Tony Stewart made a point in his press conference to reinforce the fact that Stewart-Haas Racing had three cars and that Newman drove for the team. Until Friday, we were unaware of that fact. Since Newman finished in the top 5, not only can you get that free Bloomin' Onion, but you also have a chance to get a free month's mortgage from Quicken. Odds of Newman keeping all his promotions straight the entire year: 1,000,000,000 - 1.

8. Regan Smith. The man who led Saturday's Nationwide race off turn four bounced back nicely on Sunday with a top 10 run. Dude's going to be a championship contender in NASCAR's No. 2 series this year and he'll be in many more 500s to come.

9. TIE. Michael McDowell and JJ Yeley. Score one for perseverance, eh? McDowell's first Cup Series top 10 came in his 115th Cup start and it was the first time that Yeley finished in the top 10 since 2008 at New Hampshire. It was a great moment for two guys who have spent most of recent history starting and parking in the Cup Series. We know Tommy Baldwin wants to let Yeley race as much as possible, hopefully the same can be said for Phil Parsons Racing.

11. Denny Hamlin. Score one for being the lone standing Joe Gibbs Racing car, I guess. Hamster led 33 laps and gave JGR a chance of having a first and worst weekend. Alas, he went backwards over the final laps of the race and finished 14th. Better than having a blown engine though.

12. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. We had to get Danica and Ricky in Power Rankings so that they could immortalize this, print it out, frame it and potentially show it to any future Stenicas that there's room in the From the Marbles Power Rankings for both of them.

Dropping Out: Dude, it's the first one of the season.

Lucky Dog: Aric Almirola. Not too often that you can bounce back from a pit road speeding penalty under green and come back to finish 13th.

DNF: Carl Edwards. Got in his fifth crash of Speedweeks. Honorable mention goes to Matt Kenseth, Kasey Kahne, Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick. They all finished outside the top 30 too.

Video: The F-Type Takes Center Stage in the Full Trailer for "Desire"

Back in January, Jaguar announced that its new F-Type sports roadster would be featured in a new video called "Desire," which is set to be released later this spring. Now the sports car is once again featured in a video, but this time around it is a trailer for a film named "Desire" video.

After these two teasers, we are excited to finally see the full "Desire" film, which was created in collaboration with Ridley Scott Associates.

The film obviously takes place in the desert, where the main character - Clark, played by actor Damian Lewis - delivers cars for a living. He gets into trouble after encountering a mysterious, young woman (Shannyn Sossamon) in the middle of the desert. Alongside them, the video will also star Jordi Moll and music by BRIT award winner Lana Del Rey.

Video: The F-Type Takes Center Stage in the Full Trailer for "Desire" originally appeared on topspeed.com on Saturday, 9 March 2013 06:00 EST.

Antron Brown walks away from scary Top Fuel crash after his engine explodes at Pomona

Antron Brown walked away from a scary and fiery crash as his Top Fuel dragster crossed the finish line in Sunday's first NHRA race of the season at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, CA.

As Brown crossed the finish line after beating Dave Grubnic in the second round of eliminations, his car's engine exploded with so much force that it sent his dragster onto its side and into the far wall on the left side outside of Grubnic's lane and cracked the wall. After hitting the wall, it then skidded down the track, into another wall and into the sand pit at the end of the strip before coming to a stop.

Thankfully, the NHRA Safety Safari crew was able to remove Brown from the car and he went to the ambulance. Brown was treated and released from the care center. Brown's car was equipped with a safety canopy to enclose the cockpit -- a measure that was approved in August of last year.

Decompressing after Daytona

Random notes and observations after the Daytona 500.

Jeff Burton was not happy after crashing out of Sunday's race. He said the crash was precipitated by a block by one of the cars in front of him. Burton crashed in the tri-oval, and the two cars directly in front of him at the time of the crash were Michael McDowell and Travis Kvapil. However, it's unclear which driver Burton is specifically referring to.

"We were going around one of those cars and he just hung a right on me on the straightaway," Burton said. "Just hung a right. I had to turn right to keep from hitting him and the thing hugh a right, head-on into the wall. It's pathetic to race like that. You've got to be smarter than that. I understand it's plate racing, you've got to try to block, but you can't block somebody that is coming 20 miles an hour faster than you are. It's just completely uncalled for."

- What the heck happened to Jeff Gordon? After making an ill-fated move to the inside line in the middle of Sunday?s race, Gordon worked his way back towards the front of the field near the end. But again, he found himself getting shuffled back. He finished 24th.

?I love the start that we got and we were up front there and in great shape. We lost track position and it didn?t seem like we were ever going to get it back. Then we finally did and those last two restarts just didn?t go very well.?

- McDowell?s 9th place finish was his first top 10 in the Sprint Cup Series.

- JJ Yeley finished 10th for Tommy Baldwin Racing, and that means that kids eat free at Golden Corral. And because Ryan Newman finished in the top 10, Bloomin? Onions are free at Outback Steakhouse. Go forth and overeat.

- The first crash of the day took out both Earnhardt Ganassi cars. You know how Kyle Busch said that his engine failure made it feel like 2012 all over again? I?m sure those struggles were a familiar feeling for the EGR cars as well.

?Somebody backed up to my grille. It was just a little touch,? Montoya said of the incident. I saw them when they were all getting together and I said ?Oh they are wrecking.? And as soon as I said they were wrecking (Kasey Kahne) went left into me. I managed to brake and just touched him a little bit with the the nose.?

Extra $1 million bonus available in new All-Star Race payout

The race format for the Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway was unchanged, but on Tuesday, the speedway announced that an extra $1 million will be given to a driver if he or she wins all five race segments.

The race will still be broken into four segments of 20 laps and a final 10 lap segment, but instead of being based on the finishing order of the fourth segment or how the drivers came off pit road between segments, the final segment will be determined by a driver's average finish in the first four segments.

Why's that? Well, last year, Jimmie Johnson laid back during the middle of the race. He won the first 20 lap segment, which ensured that he'd lead the field to pit road before the final 10 lap segment. So in that time between, Johnson was extra cautious at the back of the pack and he and crew chief Chad Knaus perfected the car's setup. After leading the field down pit road, Johnson then stormed to the lead over the final 10 laps for the win.

Will this extra $1 million incentive ensure that a driver and team don't lay back a la Johnson and Knaus? Probably not as much as the average finish of the first four segments will. While the addition of cash is nice, the average finish caveat would have likely been enough to prevent a strategy like Johnson and Knaus'. (Which was absolutely brilliant given the rules of last year's race.)

The race will feature one mandatory four-tire pit stop and race winners from 2012 and the 2013 races before the May 18 event, drivers who have won an All-Star Race in the past 10 years, two drivers from the Sprint Showdown and the Sprint Showdown driver not in the top two who wins the fan voting for the final spot.

The continued inclusion of the fan vote brings up an interesting question: how likely is it that Danica Patrick will make the All-Star Race? If Patrick doesn't win a race before the event or get in the top two, it's reasonable to assume that she would be the favorite at the moment for the fan vote given that Dale Earnhardt Jr. is automatically in the race after winning at Michigan last year. Unless Patrick fans don't participate in the voting, it would likely take a concerted grassroots effort on the behalf of another driver to overtake her in the voting.
