Electric Superbus is Finally Road Legal

We have seen the supercar, supertruck, and we are just starting to get into the superSUV, so what else could engineers possibly put ?super? in front of? Well, the engineers at the Delft Institute of Technology have a new one for you, the Superbus.

The Superbus has been a long work in progress and we have brought you several updates. First we broke the news to you about the designing of such a machine, back in 2006. In 2011, we alerted you that the machine was finally complete and could hit top speeds of 155 mph on electric power only.

Well, here we are, six years after its initial conception and we finally have and a purpose for this Lamborghini-meets-school-bus electric mass transit system, as well as a road-legal model. According to Fox News, a license plate was finally issued for this creation, which makes road testing legal, allowing its engineers to see how well it performs in real life.

You may wonder what in the world anyone would need with a 50-foot-long, 23-seat, six-wheeled Superbus. Well, the United Arab Emirates have your answer. Dubai and Abu Dhabi, two UAE members, are separated by about 75 miles of highways and want a way to connect the two cities with as little travel time as possible.

The two cities plan to build a stretch of highways connecting them and purchasing a fleet of these Superbuses to trek this journey in just 30 minutes. That?s some serious ass haulin?. We are at least three years away from seeing a production version of this all-electric Superbus, but the issuing of a license plate is a promising site. We will keep you updated on this slow development project as news becomes available.

You can catch a glimpse of this Superbus in the above video.

Electric Superbus is Finally Road Legal originally appeared on topspeed.com on Saturday, 16 June 2012 18:00 EST.

2012 Silverstone MotoGP Friday Round Up: An Up-And-Down Kind Of Day

"It was an up-and-down day," Ben Spies said after practice on Friday, and truly, he spoke for a large part of the paddock. It started with the weather: the overnight rain continued for the better part of the morning, leaving the track soaking during FP1. The sun came out at lunchtime, quickly drying out the track, helped by the strong winds buffeting the circuit. The dry track helped, the wind certainly didn't. "That's what happens when you build a circuit on an airfield," Cal Crutchlow commented curtly, after complaining about being blown around by the gusting wind in the afternoon.

Carl Edwards hits wall, falls out of top 10 in points standings

After finishing second in the 2008 title race to Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards was the presumptive favorite to take home the Sprint Cup Series championship in 2009.

He finished 11th.

In 2011, he tied Tony Stewart for the title ? losing out on wins 5 to 1 ? and entered 2012 as one of the favorites to win the 2012 Sprint Cup Series championship.

After Sunday, the 13th race of the Sprint Cup season, Edwards is now 12th in the points standings, 96 points out of first place. His last win was at Las Vegas in March... of 2011, a span of 46 races.

Thanks to a pile of top fives (19) and a host of top 10s (26), Edwards' sheer consistency kept him near the front of the field during the entire season in 2011. And while it'd be untrue to say that the consistency has departed Edwards this season ? he has eight top 10s in 13 races ?it's certainly stepped back a notch. His two top-fives are, well, fives, and the top 10s are a host of eighth-, ninth- and 10th-place finishes. That is a step back that's magnified by the success of his Roush Fenway teammates Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth, who are 1-2 in the points standings and each have a win.

[Related: Jimmie Johnson delivers defining victory at Dover]

Sunday was shaping up to be another 2012-type of day for Edwards. After qualifying 19th, he hung around the top 15 for the first 164 laps of the race. But then, catastrophe struck, as he lost a right front tire and the car smacked the wall. He finished 26th.

Right now, thanks to the Wild Card, Edwards would not be in the Chase. Just halfway through the regular season, is that a legitimate cause for concern? He's led in two races this season for 207 laps, with 206 of those laps coming at Richmond. He's only five points behind Clint Bowyer for 10th place in the points standings, but Bowyer is the only driver in the vicinity of Edwards in the standings that doesn't also have a win, meaning that at the moment, it's top 10 or bust for both.

Edwards will get to victory lane soon enough (of course, we've been saying that about someone else for a while now, too), but will that soon enough be soon enough and often enough to grab the Wild Card if necessary?

Mark Webber wins Monaco Grand Prix

Mark Webber kicked off the longest day in auto racing on Sunday winning the Monaco Grand Prix from the pole, holding off a gaggle of cars over the race's final 10 laps to win his second race at the famed street circuit.

The Australian qualified second but started first because of a five-place grid penalty for pole winner Michael Schumacher thanks to an incident two weeks ago in Barcelona. The threat of heavy rain meant a myriad of strategies for the field, but once pit stops cycled through about two-thirds of the way through the race, Webber found himself in the lead once again.

Nico Rosberg got to Webber's back bumper during the closing laps of the race but was never able to get in a position to attempt to overtake the race leader. Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, who finished third, grabbed the points lead.

Webber became the sixth different winner in six F1 races this season. And is his win a good omen for the Australians on the front row in Indianapolis and Charlotte? Ryan Briscoe is on the pole for the Indianapolis 500 and Marcos Ambrose starts Sunday night's Coca-Cola 600 second.

David Reutimann will take Kurt Busch?s seat at Pocono

Kurt Busch's suspension has set off a domino effect among NASCAR teams, as Phoenix Racing will fill Busch's vacant 51 car this weekend at Pocono with Tommy Baldwin Racing driver David Reutimann. Dave Blaney will jump to Reutimann's vacated No. 10, and Tony Raines will run Blaney's No. 36. Got all that?

"I understand the position James [Finch, Phoenix Racing owner] was put in this week," Baldwin said in a statement. "As an owner of a small team, I wanted to help him out. We talked and thought that this lineup would be best for both of our teams."

Meanwhile, Finch has given every indication that Busch's fulltime return to his car is by no means a sure thing. Speaking on Tuesday morning to Sirius/XM's NASCAR radio, Finch noted that he and Busch would have a "come-to-Jesus meeting" next week.

"He needs to either get his mind right or he's going to be working somewhere else," Finch said. "Quit wrecking cars. Be nice to people. That's not hard to do."

Finch had similarly pointed comments for ESPN.com's David Newton: "If he's going to kill himself I'm not going to be in the airplane with him," Finch said. "If that's what he's planning on doing, I am going to get out."

Busch is suspended until June 13 for, basically, acting like an idiot, although NASCAR didn't phrase it quite that way. He has issued a statement of apology but has given no indication when he will publicly speak on the matter.

IndyCar won?t race in China in 2012

IndyCar isn't going to China after all.

The series' inaugural race in Qingdao, China has been called off because of a beer festival conflict. Seriously.

From the AP:

Bernard had been working with promoters in Qingdao the last several months to salvage the race, which was announced last November to run at the same time as the International Beer Festival. The inaugural race would have been held on a temporary 3.87-mile street circuit in the city that hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics sailing competition.

Despite an existing contract, new leadership in local government balked at the IndyCar race. Discussions began with IndyCar about moving the event to a new date or new location.

Doubts had been swirling about the future of the Qingdao race, so the cancellation isn't too much of a surprise. As the series works out contract logistics with the Qingdao promoter, it's now looking for a replacement race.

"We wanted to give the China race every opportunity to move forward and be successful, but IndyCar has been notified by the promoter that the event is cancelled for 2012," Bernard said in a release. "We were informed that the promoter was trying to move the event to a different date and location. After ongoing discussions regarding alternative dates, as well as doing our due diligence in exploring alternate venues in China, the promoter cancelled the event. A decision had to be made to allow IndyCar and its participants to plan accordingly for the second half of the season."

Per the AP article, Pocono and Texas are being looked at as possibilities. The possibility of Texas is especially intriguing given the consternation that surrounded last weekend's race at TMS, the first high-banked oval race since Dan Wheldon's death. Before the race, one of the dominant storylines was if the series would return to Texas in 2013.

Previous Texas races had featured Talladega style racing with packs of 20 cars sometimes lined up nose-to-tail. On Saturday night that virtually disappeared, as the lack of downforce in the new chassis meant that after a few laps the cars were able to spread out a bit. Plus, tire fall-off meant that teams needed to perfect the balance on their cars, lest they wanted to lose a ton of speed throughout a fuel run. (Justin Wilson, Saturday's winner, made up a lot of ground during long green flag stints.) Apparently, those factors -- along with a safe race -- means that the track is in the discussion for the even nearer future.

Pocono last hosted a major open-wheel race in 1989, when Danny Sullivan won the last CART race at the track, so the IndyCar Series at the triangle wouldn't be that much of a stretch. And it'd be interesting to see how fast a lap at Pocono would be with the new pavement. In 1989, the pole-winning speed was 211 MPH.

Kyle Busch wins Prelude to the Dream at Eldora Speedway

Kyle Busch took advantage of the misfortune of Kasey Kahne and Clint Bowyer and won the 8th annual Feed the Children Prelude to the Dream at Eldora Speedway on Wednesday night, outrunning race host and organizer Tony Stewart over the final 16 laps.

If you were a Sprint Cup Series fan who found yourself wondering how much you would pay for a caution flag at certain points during the season's first 13 races, you certainly got your money's worth if you bought the late model dirt-track charity race on Pay-Per-View. The first half of the 40 lap feature was marred by caution after caution, including an eight car crash on the frontstretch on the third scored lap.

Kahne started on the pole and relinquished the lead to Bowyer, last year's winner, on lap 13. When Kahne went to get the lead back from Bowyer just a few laps later, he slid up into Bowyer's car trying to clear him. The contact sent Bowyer's car into the wall, and eventually into the garage after he got into the wall again on the next lap.

However, Kahne was the next car to find trouble. On lap 24, Bobby Labonte spun around and his car stopped in the high lane of turn 3, the preferred groove around the racetrack. Kahne swerved his car hard to the left in an attempt to avoid the parked Labonte, but ended up slamming into the driver's side of Labonte's car hard enough to rip his right front wheel completely off. (Both drivers were unhurt.)

Those events handed the lead to Busch, who started first with 16 laps to go and never relinquished the lead. By the time Stewart had moved from fifth to second, Busch already had an insurmountable advantage.

Danica Patrick, who drives for Stewart in the Sprint Cup Series, turned the first laps of her professional driving career on dirt on Wednesday. Patrick hit the wall during her heat race before the main feature and finished three laps down in 15th during the feature race.

Kurt Busch, suspended by NASCAR for Sunday's race at Pocono, was entered in the event and started on the pole for the fourth heat race before the feature but was caught up in two incidents in the heat race. The damage to his car was severe enough that he was unable to race in the main event.

Full results are below. Each of the race's top 10 finishers will have a food truck donated for Feed the Children in the city of their choice.

How many times will FOX say ?Danica? on Sunday night?

So you've probably heard that Danica Patrick is going to be running in the Coca-Cola 600 rather than the Indy 500 this weekend. You'll hear about it a lot more in the coming days. Above is a video documenting all the uses of the name "Danica" in this year's Daytona 500, and it clocked in at an astonishing 47 mentions. Not bad for someone who did just two laps before getting wrecked out. Extrapolating that out for the Coca-Cola 600 (yes, we know some of that was prerace; roll with it), we would hear the name "Danica" an astounding 9,400 times Sunday night. Whew!

Scott Dixon wins pothole delayed IndyCar race at Detroit

On Sunday at Detroit, the IndyCar Series found out how dreadful a two-hour delay to patch potholes can be.

The race was run on the street course on Belle Isle, and like many city streets and even older tracks, parts of the surface had been sealed or patched because of wear. And because of the high speeds and downforce generated by the the cars, small bits of the surface and sealant were being dislocated from the track throughout the race.

As the race progressed, mirrors, front wings, (and even helmets, in the case of Tony Kanaan), bore the signs of the flying debris. And then, so did the cars of James Hinchcliffe and Takuma Sato.

As you can tell from the audio, Hinchcliffe was not thrilled. In fact, in one area of the track, track workers were able to pull up the entire rectangular section of patch in one piece, and fairly easily, to boot.

The race was officially red-flagged on lap 45 for two hours, while track workers made repairs. (Roger Penske, who was the race promoter, said that the circuit had used some tips and tricks from Daytona's pavement escapades. However, it's doubtful that Tide was utilized.)

The delay meant that the race was shortened from its original 90 lap scheduled distance to 60 laps. The frantic scheduled 13 lap green flag sprint to the finish also began as some raindrops began to fall on the course, leading to some carnage as Helio Castroneves, Ryan Briscoe, Ed Carpenter and others spun around. Scott Dixon easily pulled away from teammate Dario Franchitti over the final six laps.

In all honesty, while there wasn't any action during the delay, the race before that wasn't much of a barnburner. Passing throughout the entire course was very difficult and Dixon, the pole sitter, wasn't passed on track for the lead all day. To put it nicely, this wasn't what the series was looking for as a follow-up to a thrilling Indianapolis 500 and as a distraction to the controversy surrounding its owners and CEO.

Will we see thrilling action Saturday night at Texas Motor Speedway? That's the first race for the series since last October on a high-banked intermediate track.
