Peugeot quits sports car racing

Peugeot has shocked the sports car world by withdrawing its factory teams from Le Mans competition – with immediate effect. The company debuted the 908 sports car in 2007 but was beaten at Le Mans by Audi, although there were victories in other races. It was a similar story in 2008 but the team won [...]

Daytona winner Trevor Bayne returning to Wood Brothers

Trevor Bayne will be defending his Daytona 500 title for the Wood Brothers as the team made Bayne's return to the No. 21 in 2012 official on Thursday.

From the Wood Brothers Racing site:

"It's taken a long time to get to this announcement, but it's good to be back together," team co-owner Eddie Wood said. "We all wanted to do what was best for Ford Motor Company and its young drivers, and to be sure everybody had a place to race."

While Bayne won the Daytona 500, Ricky Stenhouse won the Nationwide Series title and there was speculation that Stenhouse could inherit the ride in 2 012. Both drive for Roush-Fenway Racing in the Nationwide Series, and when Bayne, 20, was sidelined with lyme disease for part of the 2011 season, Stenhouse replaced him in the Coca-Cola 600. (Stenhouse will race in the 500 in the Roush Fenway No. 6.)

Motorcraft/Quick Lane also returns to the No. 21, but it's unclear how many races the team will attempt in 2012. Last year, the team had enough funding after the Daytona win to run 18 races.

Believe it or not, that Daytona win was Bayne's only top 10 in 17 Cup starts in 2011. In 29 starts in the Nationwide Series last year, Bayne won the fall race at Texas Motor Speedway and had 14 top 10s.

Robby Gordon storms through the Dakar Rally

Say what you will about Robby Gordon as a NASCAR driver, the dude has the lug nuts to race anything, anytime, anywhere. He's at the Dakar Rally right now, and after three stages, sits in second place, just 54 seconds out of first.

Now, even though the rally is named for Dakar, Senegal, it's run in South America now, thanks to that nasty habit African countries have of getting overthrown. We'll keep you updated, or you can follow the action from the official website. And for you Robby Gordon fans out there, keep up with your boy over at Planet Robby, where they'll be covering his every mile. Kilometer? Whatever.

Above, Gordon's start, where he pulled off a lovely burnout right in front of perhaps-not-so-smart crowds before launching into the race. You don't need a translator, do you?

Crescent Suzuki WSBK Press Release: Hopkins Has Finger Amputated

John Hopkins has had the top half of the ring finger on his right hand amputated. After a series of complications and surgeries to the finger he broke at Brno in 2011, his doctor advised Hopkins that the best course of action was to have the finger removed, and so the American had immediate surgery to amputate the finger, to allow him to be ready for the start of the 2012 World Superbike season, which kicks off at Phillip Island on February 26th. After the surgery, Hopper posted a photo of his bandaged right hand, minus the missing half a finger, on Twitter.

Mercedes SLS AMG by Weistec Engineering

We don’t always hear from the people over at Weistec Engineering, but every so often, these guys resurface with a program that just blows you away.

With that being said, Weistec has unveiled the first details of their latest project involving the mighty Mercedes SLS AMG. Packed with an extensive list of performance modifications, Weistec was able to put enough added horsepower on the supercar to make it, at least according to Weistec, the most powerful SLS AMG in the world...period.

The biggest addition to the SLS AMG is a new 2.3-liter Twin-Screw compressor, a supercharger system that clearly defies anything we’ve ever seen before outfitted to an SLS AMG. On top of that, Weistec also put in dual high flow cast aluminum T6 intake tubes, brisk spark plugs, a fuel delivery system upgrade, and a 1,000-hp liquid-to-air unit with aluminum lower manifold and aluminum throttle body inlets.

That’s not all.

A Constant Mu, Delta Pressure (CMDP) cog drive system was also added, as was a billet aluminum cog drive cradle assembly, a new cog belt, a new drive belt, aluminum serpentine idlers, a 30 liter intercooler water pump, an intercooler recovery tank, a new heat exchanger, a high flow fuel rail system, silicone couplers, and a power-steering reservoir relocation assembly.

The list of modifications is already making our heads spin. But through it all, Weistec was able to improve the SLS AMG’s 6.3-liter V8 engine and increase the output from the standard 563 horsepower and 479 lb/ft of torque all the way up to an insane 750 horsepower and 664 lb/ft of torque.

Mercedes SLS AMG by Weistec Engineering originally appeared on topspeed.com on Friday, 13 January 2012 20:00 EST.

Wait, Daytona is next month? But I?m still hung over from Homestead!

Welcome to 2012, everybody! Seems like just yesterday that we were weighing out the intricacies of the Tony Stewart-Carl Edwards battle, and here we are ready to do it all over again! Daytona is just a few weeks away, but before then we've got media festivities, Speedweeks and the whole shebang. We'll have predictions and the like all throughout the week, but for now, it's your take: what are you looking for in NASCAR in 2012?

Photographers Blog-Darkroom Decisions

I'm going to be appearing at the San Francisco Dainese store again in February and I anticipate still more questions about photography in addition to those about what it's like to work in the MotoGP paddock, so I thought I'd post something photography-related here for those of you who enjoy taking pictures at the races.

The above image of Marco Simoncelli at Indy is one of my personal favorites from 2011, and I thought it would be useful when talking about what a photographer can do in the darkroom, whether that's one that smells of chemicals or the digital version. While some photographers still lament the loss of film as a medium for various and often quite legitimate reasons, I am grateful for the opportunities to start with one image and end up with another via digital tools more powerful than those in the wet darkroom. This image is a good example of how digital tools turned one image into something much different, and ultimately a photograph that I place among my best of the season.
