Power Rankings: A (Junior) Nation rises

It's time for Power Rankings! After every race, we'll opine about who we think is at the top of the Sprint Cup heap and how and why they got there. Remember, this isn't scientific, as our formula is the perfect blend of analytics and bias against your favorite driver. So let's get on with it, shall we?

1. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (LW: 2): Heeeeeeeere's Junior! He's the only dude to finish in the top five in every race this season and there's absolutely no way he can't be atop Power Rankings as we head into the first week of the offseason. If his potato chips are as good as he's performing, then he's really rocking it right now. And maybe the Gonzaga comparison in last week's rankings was a bit unfair. The Zags collapsed late on Saturday night. Junior surged forward on Sunday.

2. Kasey Kahne (LW: 3): Kahne quickly moved his way to the front after starting 16th and was one of the handful of drivers who tattooed (ha!) the wall off turn two thanks to the oil that was put down from Timmy Hill's car. But unlike most everyone else in that incident, Kahne got back towards the front despite the tape on the right side of his car and only finished 9th because of the drivers behind him that took tires during the final caution flag.

3. Jimmie Johnson (LW: 4): Yes, Vader gets to move up a spot after a 12th place finish. Why? Because he probably didn't deserve to finish 12th. It's kind of like what Junior and Steve Letarte have done over the last few years. And now I could spout a cliche about how those types of finishes define championship teams, but you've heard that before. But, it is true, good teams know how to make salad out of you know what.

4. Brad Keselowski (LW: 2): Does Keselowski now drive for Joe Gibbs Racing? We kid, but it was not a good weekend in the engine department for the champ. He blew an engine in practice and started at the back of the pack and then saw his engine go sour late in the race on Sunday. In between, he had a rocketship of a race car early in Sunday's race. Like Kahne, he hit the wall in Hill's oil. Unlike Kahne, his car wasn't as fast afterwards.

5. Kyle Busch (LW: 6): Is that the first race that you can remember that Busch has come from (relative) nowhere to win? Maybe it's because the images of Busch leading a ton of laps are burned in our brains, but it was a bit of a late laps role reversal for Busch. Of course, he also led 125 laps, so that wasn't all that new. It was just the combination of all the laps led and the win that's so striking.

6. Joey Logano (LW: 8): If Kyle Busch drove the best race on Sunday, Logano was a close second. He hung near the front all day and was the only driver to consistently challenge Busch, and on the low side of the track to boot. And perhaps more importantly, it was a great statement race for Logano to show that he can drive with his former teammates and he wasn't backing down from Denny Hamlin. Though it's not much of a stretch to think that Logano would have driven turns 3 and 4 on lap 200 exactly the same if it wasn't Hamlin on his hip. He was going for the freaking win!

7. Denny Hamlin (LW: 11): Our best wishes go out to Hamlin for a speedy and full recovery from his L1 compression fracture. Back injuries are no fun, especially for someone who already has dealt with them in the past. And hopefully any potential layoff from the car for Hamlon doesn't deprive us of a brewing rivalry that has the potential to be one of NASCAR's best in recent memory and a longstanding one to boot.

8. Carl Edwards (LW: NR): It's almost unfathomable to think that through five races Edwards has as many top five finishes in 2013 (3) as he in 2012. But it's true, thanks to Edwards' fourth place finish on Sunday. Edwards crept near the front, but was never a threat for the win. But you know what? He was near the front. That wasn't uttered often last year.

9. Greg Biffle (LW: 8): Just like the @Kes, Fiffle started at the back because of an engine change. And also like Kes, he moved through the field pretty quickly. Here's where they diverge though: Biffle took tires late and finished sixth. It's an odd-numbered year, which generally means that Biffle is off his game. But so far so good.

10. Paul Menard (LW: 9): ALL ABOARD THE PFM TRAIN! An eighth place finish has Menard... eighth in the points. It ain't spectacular, but it sure is solid, much like Menard's RCR career. At this rate, he's going to be again in contention for the Chase. Except he won't be in the "also has a mathematical shot but we know it's not going to happen" category.

11. Matt Kenseth: (LW: 10): It almost feels unfair to Kenseth for dropping him a spot after finishing seventh, but finishing one spot ahead of the great PFM isn't enough to leapfrog him in Power Rankings this week. And besides, we're trying to elicit a good Matt Kenseth one liner on Twitter out of this. Flatline needs to start tweeting more!

12. Kurt Busch: (LW: NR): Welcome to Power Rankings, Kurt! Did you bring us any furniture? Perhaps that couch you sat on at your media tour stop? Sweet, you did. Have a seat. Now will you be here for the long haul or are you just keeping the cushion warm for Tony Stewart or Jeff Gordon or someone else?

Dropped out: AJ Allmendinger, Clint Bowyer

Lucky Dog: Let's give a shoutout to Casey Mears, who finished 15th. He's a spot ahead of Stewart in the standings. You could have gotten really good odds on that in Vegas.

The Tony Stewart DNF: Goes to Tony Stewart again! (Yeah, it wasn't much of a DNF, but that was one heck of a slide backwards) That frustration you saw from Smoke was one fueled by frustration at that freefall through the field over the last 11 laps. Had Smoke finished in the top 10, he might have had some choice words for Logano in his postrace quotes, but that would have been that.

Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano: Does track type determine the acceptability of contact?

Denny Hamlin has every right to be frustrated.

The first Sprint Cup race he?s missed since becoming the full-time driver of the No. 11 for Joe Gibbs Racing is rapidly approaching. Martinsville is one of his best tracks statistically, and he?ll be atop his team?s pit box next to crew chief Darian Grubb while Mark Martin drives the car.

As you?ve read, oh, fifty, sixty, seventy times since that race on March 24, the injury Hamlin suffered came when after he and Joey Logano made contact in turns three and four on the final lap at Auto Club Speedway. After the two banged sidepanels and drifted towards the outside wall, Hamlin?s car made a hard left turn and went careening towards the inside wall. An inside wall that didn?t have a SAFER barrier. Hamlin suffered a compression fracture to his L1 vertebra, an injury that will likely keep him out of the car for five races.

Of course, it?s not as simple as a final lap ?racin? deal.? The week prior at Bristol, Hamlin had spun Logano as the two were racing for second place. Logano, after talking to Hamlin briefly after the race, said that Hamlin had one coming.

?Obviously I know who I?m racing against and what happened a week before but going into turn three on the last lap, I remember ?I?m going to win the race,?? Logano said on ESPN Tuesday. ?My number one goal is to go win a race. So did I intentionally wreck him? No, I did not intentionally do that. If I was going to do that I would have hit him in the left-rear tire. I hit him in the door. It?s hard racing at that point.?

Hamlin said Thursday that he didn?t blame Logano for the injury, but did for the crash at California.

From the Sporting News:

?(I do not blame him) for the particular injury; I do for the wreck,? Hamlin told a group of reporters on Wednesday. ?I think the injury was circumstantial. For what happened, I think it?s just a product of wrecking on a 2-mile speedway, you risk getting hurt.?

The type of track is the crux of Hamlin?s argument. Logano?s comments about the crash sounded awfully similar to Hamlin?s after Bristol. At Bristol, Hamlin said that he had meant to make contact with Logano, but that he didn?t want to spin him.

?I didn?t see it as a huge deal,? Hamlin said before the race at California. ?People at Bristol make contact. Where my frustration level was, people didn?t see the three times I got cut off before you saw it on TV, one time giving us left front damage. So that ticked me off, and obviously my way of retaliating was to nudge him. Well, I shouldn?t have nudged him in the spot where I did, and he spun out.?

While Hamlin?s frustration about the injury and seeing his chances for the win at California disappear like they did is understandable, should he have been expecting Logano to treat him the same way he treated Logano at Bristol, even if he personally felt that Auto Club wouldn?t be the right place to back up his words with actions?

Generally, short track races have served as the sport?s grudge levelers, as the higher speeds and spread out nature of NASCAR?s intermediate tracks don?t usually lend themselves to many opportunities for revenge. But how often do you find yourself racing for the win on the final lap alongside the driver who crashed you the week prior? Would Hamlin?s actions on that final corner had been any different had the roles been reversed? (Logano has also been on the wrong side of intentional contact at larger tracks before, having been bumped out of the way for the lead approaching the white flag at Pocono in 2010.)

''How is (the contact) not intentional? It's not like he got loose because I took air off him,'' Hamlin said Thursday. ''I saw him getting closer, and I moved up the track. He was just going to keep going until he ran into us. Whatever happened after that, I'm sure he didn't mean to wreck or get me hurt, but he meant to run into us, there's no doubt. He didn't get loose with the back. He drove into us with the front. That's a guy seeing I was going to get the better of him that week. He wasn't going to let that happen. He hit the gas until he hit something.''

There?s a difference between aggressive driving to cause contact and aggressive driving to cause a crash, and both drivers claim their actions were intended to be the former, though they resulted in unintentional consequences. The debate if Logano?s actions were appropriate at a track with speeds that reach as high as they do at California will continue; Hamlin certainly doesn?t think so. Is there a right answer? Or are the lines simply blurred or nonexistent?

Tom Sykes was the quickest man at the Aragon tests, despite still suffering from a wrist injury, and he continued to dominate the morning's free practice session, but it was the BMWs of Marco Melandri and Chaz Davies that finally took the top two spots ahead of the Kawasaki man. Eugene Laverty was able to exploit his Aprilia's long legs down the back straight while Leon Camier was able to continue his run of good form at the tests to put his Suzuki in fifth, ahead of the Hondas of Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam.

Danica Patrick got hit in the head by a rock

When you see the headline "Danica Patrick got hit in the head with a rock," your first thought is, "Who threw it?" (Our money would be on one of the Busch brothers. Maybe Tony Stewart.)

But no, turns out Patrick was clonked purely by accident at a Vegas dirt-track race. She's fine, thanks for asking: ?I feel like I have a concussion from [Thursday] night," she said. "I got hit by a rock at the dirt track and I took it to the ground. I feel like this is really sore. It hit me straight in the head. Good thing I had a hat on or I?m feeling like there would have been blood."

On a slightly more serious note, Patrick did have to undergo some testing after her vicious hit in Phoenix, where the entire side of her car was torn open after a blown right tire sent her into the wall.

"I was able to say my name and where I was born [to safety crews]," she said. "They take your blood pressure, they do like vitals and they ask how you?re feeling and I really felt fine. It?s understandable that my neck would be sore. The medical staff always does a checkup the next day, they either call or send you a text to ask how you?re doing ... I said I had a headache on Sunday night and on Monday my neck was sore. They said, 'It sounded like it could have been worse, so we?re glad you?re okay.'"

[Also: African-American female driver overstating claims]

So with her bell rung already, Vegas is off to a great start for Patrick. The whereabouts of the rock are unknown. Surely there are plenty of people ready to chastise it for threatening NASCAR's darling, and quite a few others ready to shake whatever passes for a rock's hand. Either way, somebody could've made a few bucks by selling it on ebay.

Patrick's luck didn't quite extend to the weather; because of a rainout of qualifying, she'll start deep in the pack on Sunday. Here's how it worked: because qualifying was rained out, the top 36 teams from last year took the first 36 spots. That means Brad Keselowski, last year's Sprint Cup champion, will start on the pole. (This pole, however, does not get him into the 2014 Sprint Unlimited preseason race at Daytona.)

Three remaining spots were filled out by teams in the top 36 in 2013 owner's points. So Patrick, David Stremme and Michael McDowell will be in the race. The final four spots were determined by qualifying attempts in 2013; owners' points broke any ties.

The remaining spots for positions 40-43 were determined by qualifying attempts this year, with ties broken by owner points. So Scott Speed, Landon Cassill, Joe Nemechek and Josh Wise were in; Mike Bliss is the only driver left out.

"I don?t know how in the hell it works," Patrick said of qualifying, echoing the thoughts of many. "I am so confused. I don?t know about you guys. I?m sure this is not the best talking point for anybody who is trying to inform me, or who has. But look, you have to go like hell and you just have to qualify as well as you can. That?s all you can do."

"I was just thinking when I walked in, with this being Vegas and all, what the odds would be of a rainout in Vegas," Keselowski said. "I bet that was pretty high. Obviously whenever you can start up front, it's a big deal and you get the first pit stall and all those things that make a big difference on pit road."

The Kobalt Tools 400 starts Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.

Porsche's New Four-Cylinder Engine Won't Arrive Before 2016

The first rumors on a possible four-cylinder engine surfaced early in 2011. We initially thought it would be used on a new model placed under the current Boxster, but also on the future generations Cayman and Boxster. Though the third-generation Boxster has already been unveiled and it features no four-cylinder engine, the rumors continue to circulate.

According to a Porsche official, the four-cylinder engine is indeed being worked on, but it is still in "an early development phase." According to the same source, the development process will take about another three years, so don?t expect to see the new engine before 2016.

The new engine will share the same architecture with the six-cylinder engine used in the current models and should see use in the revised versions of the Cayman and Boxster set to go on sale in 2016.

With this news, we do need to add in a little clarity, as the Macan will be offered with a four-cylinder engine, but not the one that the source is referring to. Instead, it will use a 2.0-liter gasoline and a 2.0-liter common-rail diesel engine that Porsche fished from the VW parts bin.

Happy Hour: Coming to Denny?s defense

New season, new Happy Hour! You know the drill. Throughout the week you can send us your best questions, jokes, rants and just plain miscellaneous thoughts to happyhourmailbag@yahoo.com or @NickBromberg. We'll post them here, have a good time and everyone's happy. Right? Oh who are we kidding, this is NASCAR. No one is ever happy.

We're three for three so far with overriding themes and you can guess what the topic of discussion was this week. Given the reaction, you have to wonder how many new fans Denny Hamlin has picked up over the last seven days?
This is America. We Do have free speech. This is a new low for NASCAR. Long-time fans like me want to hear and see more of the driver's personality not just the prepared media version. Denny Hamlin has a right to be outraged and is afraid to say what he feels because the sanctioning body seems to be more powerful than the constitution of the United States! I guess this weekend I'll watch golf.
- Fred

After being a Nascar race fan for 40+ years, this Year is the most disappointing yet. After kicking out the nationwide driver Clements for saying something maybe out of line and to my understand of what was said !!WOW!! don?t turn on SHOWTIME - ?Inside Nascar? for the in car recordings of the drivers and crew chiefs...... Now NASCAR fining Denny Hamlin for expressing the truth about there so called new car.The racing this year has been boring to say the very least...... the cars play follow the leader. Gas mileage races are a big joke, drivers turning the engine on and off is just plain silly. Owners spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to go fast, so the fast car should win.Not the one that gets 20 mpg.....the moral to the story is maybe Nascar should do there job and keep the cars and parts out of the grandstands. Along with many other things they cannot do that either.Ask the 30 people that were injured at Daytona. I'm going to Bristol and Richmond only because we got the tickets LAST YEAR and I must enjoy been gouged by the motels as I have brought it to the attention of Bristol Motor Speedway and I see there has been no changes to the motel bookings for this year.
Sorry to SAY this is the end of this Nascar fan. ITS OVER

Just read the article re: Hamster's fine for his comments. Question; was (Kyle Busch) ever fined for his comments after he won Bristol with the COT/Gen-5 car? If not, then NASCAR is way out of bounds on this because if they're going to fine Denny, they should've fined Kyle then.

What is NASCAR thinking?? Denny?s comments were very forthright and factual. They didn?t seem to hate on the new car, just pointed out that it would take time for teams to figure it out which would be frustrating to any driver. But NASCAR fining him $25 Grand for on observation is chicken crap!! If you recall, when KB won the first race with the C.O.T. his comment after winning the race was that he hated the car and they pretty much sucked. The next year KB won 8 races in that car!!

First off, I'm not sure that we can say with any certainty that Busch wasn't fined for what he said about the COT. After all, we've just entered a new era of fine transparency in NASCAR. For all we know, Joe Nemechek could have a racked up a fine bill of hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years. (No, probably not. We love you, Joe.)

While NASCAR may realize that they've overreached in this instance, they're now in a position that they're likely not going to overreach again. Why? Because who the heck is going to speak truthfully about any negatives when it comes to the new car or the quality of racing in the future? This was essentially a pre-emptive strike to scare off anyone thinking of a threat. Will it work? I hope not. But I fear so.

So I'm that rarest of creatures: The liberal NASCAR fan. Worse, it's not like I was raised in NASCAR country and later realized I was liberal. Nope, I live in LA, work in entertainment, and like NASCAR.

It's a lonely existence. After the 2011 championship race, I had no one at work to gush to. Worse, I've taken all kinds of abuse from co-workers, some of it outright venemous (and unprofessional), although most of it is just talking trash. But it's truly been a lesson in the culture wars in this country. Co-workers don't mock the Brit next to me who follows Formula 1, because that's "exotic." They do take cheap shots at me, though, because NASCAR because it's filled with rednecks. Nothing to do with racing itself, just pure dislike for the fly-over states.

So here I've been, explaining how NASCAR *isn't* just a bunch of redneck idiots, and then the NRA 500 comes along. What the hell am I supposed to do with that? I mean, I can't think of convincing argument to the charge "It's a bunch of gun-loving rednecks," at least not until there's a Planned Parenthood 500.

Then again, maybe NASCAR doesn't care. Maybe they are more concerned about the other thing lurking around the bend: The fact that I (and a bunch of other people) just cancelled cable. And, honestly, this NRA thing makes me feel a lot less guilty about it.
-Andy W.

Andy, I think there are a lot more of you than you realize. And I hate to break it to you, the race is on Fox.

That was some of the "finest" racing I've seen all year.

I don't think I would put out the Warped Wednesday rush to judgment map out for real just yet when it comes to the racing. We've had three races at three distinctly different types of tracks. There was bound to be a feeling out process with this car, and for better or worse, we're right now in that phase. How long will it be? That's the question. For NASCAR's sake given all of the hype, the racing quality needs to be distinctly different pretty damn soon unless they want to deal with a lot of negative feedback... without the slightest hint of any potential driver instigation.

Man?s NASCAR headstone banned by church; widow sues

Fair warning, you may have to scrap those NASCAR-themed tombstone plans depending on your body's future place of rest's regulations.

(AP)

Jason Carr died in a 2009 car crash and his wife Shannon spent nearly $10,000 on a custom headstone in the shape of a couch featuring the NASCAR logo, the logo of the Indianapolis Colts and a deer and a dog. However, the couple's church said it didn't meet the specifications of its cemetery and therefore wouldn't be allowed as his grave marker.

[Also: NASCAR Power Rankings: More of the same from Brad Keselowski]

Shannon Carr is now suing. From the AP:

The Rev. Jonathan Meyer, priest at St. Joseph Catholic Church, notified the monument maker that the headstone didn't meet the cemetery's standards and couldn't be placed in the church's century-old graveyard, The Republic reported. But Carr says in her lawsuit that the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis Properties Inc., which owns the cemetery, never produced any regulations for the plot until more than a year after she tried to have the headstone installed in 2010.

Meyer says that the church knew about the plans for the headstone six weeks before Carr purchased it and that she was informed of the decision not to allow it in the cemetery and was encouraged to not purchase it. However, he did say that the regulations weren't formally official until after Carr purchased the headstone. The archdiocese of Indianapolis says that issue is out of the court's jurisdiction as it doesn't fall within the bounds of the first amendment.

And Meyer also took a dig at Carr's decision to purchase the tombstone. "Our culture breaks all the rules to make people feel good," he said. "Faithful Christians know rules and regulations are set up so there can be good for everyone."

Allmendinger?s NASCAR Career Is Effectively Over

Since we broke the news on Twitter before Saturday night’s race that A.J. Allmendinger was being replaced by Sam Hornish, the Dinger’s world has come apart. NASCAR announced he had failed a drug test, and Allmendinger has since requested the B sample be tested and admitted he tested positive for a stimulant. Penske has tabbed [...]
