Video: Gymkhana 5 has arrived!
Posted on 07.9.2012 16:00 by Kirby |
The wait took longer than we had hoped, but you know what they say, "to those who wait, there is prosperity."
So we waited...and finally, our patience has paid off. Ladies and gentlemen, Gymkhana 5 has arrived!
As promised, July 9 was the date of reckoning; the day where Ken Block goes back to his roots, away from the Hollywood look of the fourth installment and back to the raw, uncut, thrill ride of a lifetime.
This time around, the stage was set for the urban jungle that is San Francisco. Just as we expected - and hoped - Block absolutely takes the Bay by storm, complete with sick drifts, plenty of burnt rubber, and mind-bending jumps that completely blew us away. Then there’s a Travis Pastrana cameo in there too. We had hoped that he would do a few stunts of his own, but we certainly aren’t complaining on how the finished product ended up looking.
Gymkhana 5, you made our day and hopefully, the wait for 6 won’t take as long.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. vs. Batmobile. Who ya got?
OK, be forewarned: this is basically a big ad for Mountain Dew and the new Batman flick. We all good with that? Fine, let's roll. Dale Earnahrdt Jr. and the iconic "tumbler" from "The Dark Knight Rises" (they don't call it a Batmobile, but we know that's what it is) took to Michigan International Speedway for some hot laps. And while Junior's car clearly had the speed edge, the Batmobile likely would have put the 88 into the wall with little trouble had Batman (or whoever was driving the thing) been so inclined.
Alas, Junior's car doesn't appear in this movie the way it did in last summer's Transformers 3. Too bad; would have liked to see how Junior Nation would fare against Bane's army of creepy acolytes.
"The Dark Knight Rises" hits theaters July 20. Mountain Dew is on sale now. And Dale Earnhardt Jr. is hoping desperately to win his first race since 2008 this weekend.

Video: Stephen Leicht sends groundhog flying during practice at Pocono
(Note: The video above shows a car running into an animal. You may not want to click play if you're afraid of roadkill.)
Does a groundhog on the track qualify as "debris"?
During practice for Sunday's Pocono 400, a groundhog made it onto the surface of the Pocono Raceway at the entrance to the Tunnel Turn. Stephen Leicht had just completed a practice run and was using the cut-through on the inside of the tunnel turn to stay out of the way of practice traffic. And while Leicht was avoiding cars on the track, he didn't avoid the groundhog, which had ambled onto the apron from the middle of the track in front of Leicht's car. As you can see from the video above, Leicht's car ensured that the groundhog made a swift, uh, journey, to the confines of the infield.
We can only guess what happened to the groundhog after that.
Creatures appearing at Pocono is nothing new, thanks to the massive 2.5-mile track's location nestled in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains. (There's a wooded area just outside the track.) Though Jeff Burton's obliteration of two birds happened at Indianapolis, Pocono has seen everything from chicken to deer to a drunk fan on the track. While the chicken survived ? it somehow ended up on the track during a race, necessitating NASCAR officials to throw a caution ?and the drunk fan climbed the fence, the deer preceded the gopher in Pocono perishing after being struck by Neil Bonnett.
Danica Patrick?s GoDaddy ads to de-emphasize sexy elements; winning races now important
For most of its existence, the web hosting company GoDaddy.com has built an image apparently cultivated by love-starved 14-year-old boys ? skin, sass and temptation. And it's worked well enough that GoDaddy has become an institution, albeit one you wouldn't want to show your mother.
Along the way, the company's centerpiece, the insanely controversial NASCAR driver Danica Patrick, has doffed her firesuit more than a time or two. The star of a record 10 Super Bowl ads, Patrick has been a willing participant in campaigns that skirt flyover-state notions of decency. (Even so, Patrick has always had a wry smile on the ads, like she was in on the joke all along.)
Here, for instance, is Patrick feeling the urge to shower:
You get the idea.
Now, though, Patrick and GoDaddy are looking to go legit ?or, at least, a little more legit. As USA Today notes, GoDaddy has hired a new advertising firm and is taking a less raunchy approach to its ads. That will, in turn, mean that Patrick likely won't be disrobing or body-painting scantily-clad models any more. The attention-grabbing tactics served their purpose:
"As the company grows, you tend to find yourself accommodating to the masses more as opposed to trying to be polarizing," Patrick said. "They achieved that size that they just need to have that solid, mainstream presence, and that trustworthiness and credibility and things that come along with taking a slightly more safer route. I'm ready for it."
And that seems to be just fine with Patrick, who is moving in a more conservative direction herself, sponsor-wise. Coca-Cola, Tissot watches and Nationwide Insurance, among others, are companies that don't need Patrick to writhe on a hood in a bikini.
Patrick has come under considerable scrutiny, and criticism, for her perceived line-jumping in moving through NASCAR's ranks. Put it this way: She's not as popular as she is because of her on-track statistics. Still, de-emphasizing the sexy side of her persona is a savvy move to combat much of the criticism she receives, and to help move her brand forward. Next step? Actually winning a doggone race.

Carl Edwards candid after late pit stop for fuel relegates him to 20th place finish
Sitting outside the top 10 in points without a win, every race that ticks by without a trip to victory lane decreases Carl Edwards' window of opportunity to make the 2012 Chase for the Sprint Cup. And after finishing 20th Saturday night at Kentucky Speedway, Edwards admitted that the team needed to pick up the pace.
After steadily working his way through the field, Edwards restarted in third with 48 laps to go after a lengthy caution for Ryan Newman's expired engine came out with many teams on the precipice of their fuel windows. Edwards was one of those on the edge.
Some cars chose to top off their fuel tanks while others stayed out. When Edwards got the call to come in to top off to make it safely to the end, he was already committed to the racetrack. He was going to need another caution to make it to the checkered flag on fuel. He never got it, and was forced to pit from fourth place with seven laps to go.
He finished 20th.

"(Crew chief) Bob (Osborne) called me on to pit road, he knew we should have pitted that last time but I was already so far around the cone, I just didn't feel right cutting across traffic and slamming the splitter down and trying to make it to pit road," Edwards said. "So we were put in a box and we hoped that there would be a caution and there wasn't. But it's just time for us to get it in gear. We gotta go. I'm real frustrated, Bob's real frustrated. I know we can do this though ? we ran as well as any Ford out here tonight and at the end with some fuel I think we would have had a chance to win it."
Edwards is now 11th in the points standings, 34 points behind Kentucky winner Brad Keselowski for 10th. But because he's winless so far this year -- his highest finish is fifth -- he's behind Kyle Busch, Ryan Newman, Kasey Kahne and Joey Logano, drivers all with a win, in the Wild Card pecking order.
From the expression on Edwards' face and his meaningful delivery of his post-race comments, you could tell that the (relative) struggles of his race team were very real. Just last year he was tied with Tony Stewart for the championship, only to lose that tiebreaker five to one on wins. Now, crazily enough, he's a driver in badly need of a win on a 50(!) race winless streak.
And perhaps he's cognizant of the second place slump that's haunted himself and other drivers recently. After finishing second to Jimmie Johnson and leading the circuit in wins in 2008, Edwards went winless and finished 11th in 2009. Mark Martin, who finished second that year, was 13th in 2010. And Denny Hamlin, who was second in 10 and, like Edwards in 2008, led the series in wins, finished 9th in 2011.
[Related: Complete results from Quaker State 400 at Kentucky Speedway]
Hamlin and crew chief Mike Ford parted ways at the end of 2011. Edwards was quick to shoot down any thoughts of parting ways with Osborne, or any other popular theory that's been floated as a reason for the team's struggles. (Edwards and Osborne have been together since the beginning of Edwards' Sprint Cup career, save for 27 races in the middle of 2006.)
"We have to stick together as a team," Edwards said. "That's what Bob and I talked about last week I mean ? I hear it all, I hear everything ? 'Oh, he's focused on the booth,' 'He's tore up over Tony's deal last year,' 'He needs a new crew chief' ? all these things. None of that's true. We're having some bad luck and we're having some bad communication here. And we can do this together. So we could divide right now or we could come together. I've got the best crew chief in the business, he proved it at the end of the year last year. We got beat on a crazy call by (former Tony Stewart crew chief) Darian (Grubb) and those guys (when Stewart stayed out longer than Edwards and others at Homestead). But we just need to go and keep going and get this Ford in victory lane for Fastenal and all the people who support us."
