Denny Hamlin wins Talladega under yellow; Keselowski wrecks twice

TALLADEGA, Ala. ? For drivers, Talladega is NASCAR's version of Disney World, a place where dreams come true and every frog can be a prince, if only for a moment. It's a place where seasons can be salvaged and teams can be saved, and on Sunday, it might have kickstarted one of NASCAR's sputtering stars.

Denny Hamlin might well be a future champion, but he's hit a serious dry spell. Coming into Sunday, he hadn't won since last year's season finale, and hadn't won a race meaningful to his championship hopes since the second race of the 2012 Chase.

But none of that matters at Talladega, where you've got a chance to win provided you keep most of your wheels on the track. Hamlin was in the right place at the right time, leading when a final-lap caution fell, and as a result he ended up with a virtually certain Chase berth.

We'll get to that later, though. Whenever NASCAR comes to Talladega, fans and drivers alike know that there are going to be wrecks. Huge, chassis-warping, day-ending wrecks. Sunday was no exception, with many of the sport's biggest names ending the day either several laps down or on an early plane home.

Brad Keselowski was at the center of two wrecks, both apparently self-inflicted. He made contact with Danica Patrick on Lap 14 and spun into the infield, eventually restarting six laps down. Then, while racing in the pack trying to get his laps back, he got loose and set off a major wreck that involved Matt Kenseth, Jeff Gordon and several others.

Keselowski, for his part, took responsibility for the wrecks after the race on Twitter:

It's too soon to tell if that will placate many of the drivers who appeared either openly or implicitly irritated at his actions.

"I don?t know what he was doing,?? Gordon said. ?Obviously thinking that was going to be the way to get his lap back. All that it did was get a bunch of other cars wrecked.??

?If it was the other way around and it was anybody else except for him, we?d all be getting lectured," Kenseth added.

With only a handful of laps remaining, Jimmie Johnson got loose and took out Joey Logano and others. All in all, Gordon, Kenseth, Keselowski, Johnson, Logano, Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart, and Kurt Busch fell out of contention via wreck. That's some serious star power on the sidelines, and with that many top drivers on the shelf, the door was open and the way was clear for someone to make a move.

Which brings us back to Hamlin, who up until this point had exactly zero wins at Talladega, and no points-paying wins at fellow superspeedway Daytona. Talladega is always something of a crapshoot; you're at the mercy of those around you, and your day can end because of the mistake of someone 20 spots ahead of you ... or, in this case, behind.

Greg Biffle and Clint Bowyer were running second and third behind Hamlin when the final caution flew at the very start of the final lap. That flag froze the field, denying Biffle and Bowyer the chance to make a run at Hamlin.

"I was setting up to go by [Hamlin] but just never had the chance," Biffle said. "I wish I would have known that we weren't going to race all the way back, but it was a good day for us."

"It's a wild situation," Bowyer added. "It was kind of funny, we see all the smoke and it was 400 yards behind us. We're supposed to be looking out the windshield."

If they'd looked through that windshield, they'd have seen only Hamlin, who admitted after the race that he might actually be getting the hang of this superspeedway thing. "I drive superspeedway races a lot different than I used to, for sure," he said. "I'm not always the guy making the move now. I'm more staying in like and trying to be patient ... for God's sake, after nine years, you would think I'd come close to winning one."

"Denny really operates a lot off momentum," Hamlin's team owner JD Gibbs said. "He's just a great leader. He's a great driver. But he has to have that confidence, and I think he has it now."

Hamlin thus leaves Alabama with a smile on his face. The other 42 drivers leave with some mix of resignation, frustration and outright fury. "That's Talladega. What can you say?" Johnson said afterward. "Stuff happens. Well, there's a four-letter word that says it better. But that's Talladega."

Brad Keselowski on pole for Sunday's race at Dover

Damn, Brad Keselowski's average qualifying position keeps improving.

The 2012 Sprint Cup Series Champion qualified first for Sunday's race at Dover. He beat out Kyle Busch, teammate Joey Logano and Dover dominator Jimmie Johnson for the top spot.

As we mentioned in Tuesday's Power Rankings, Keselowski's average starting position of 6.8 was the best in the Sprint Cup Series since Ryan Newman in 2005. Now, with Friday's pole position, it's a scant 6.4. And the only other driver with an average start in the single digits? Logano, Keselowski's Team Penske teammate.

Through the first 13 qualifying sessions of the season, Team Penske have been beasts in the knockout qualifying format. Keselowski has started on the front row eight times and has made the final round of qualifying in all but two races. Logano has also only missed the final session twice and has started on the front row three times.

But while Keselowski's win was from a front row starting position, Logano's two wins haven't been. He started 10th at Texas and 17th at Richmond, the two tracks he's won at this season. And the main competitor to the Penske cars on Sunday? That's Johnson, who won his first race of the season last year.

Johnson has eight wins in 24 Dover starts. In six of those wins he's started in the top 10.

Kyle Larson starts fifth, while Denny Hamlin, Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Brian Vickers and Clint Bowyer round out the top 10. Only 43 cars attempted to qualify so no one missed the race.

The Story Of The Safety Car (Video)

The Safety Car played a big role this season, with its presence becoming a deciding factor in multiple races. Although some fans were left frustrated by its influence, there?s little doubting of the importance it has in modern F1. Clint Bowyer re-ups with Michael Waltrip Racing

Clint Bowyer may be having one hell of a Cinco de Mayo party.

Michael Waltrip Racing announced Monday that Bowyer, crew chief Brian Pattie and sponsor 5-Hour Energy signed contract extensions with the team. Bowyer's contract had been up at the end of the season. It's a new three-year deal.

This is big news for all of us,? Bowyer said in a statement. ?It creates great stability and excitement about what the next few years can bring. MWR is my racing home and continuing this relationship with 5-hour ENERGY was a high priority. It?s time to put the paperwork in a drawer and focus on winning.?

Bowyer joined the team before the 2012 season after Richard Childress Racing downsized from four teams to three after sponsor General Mills cut back on sponsorship on Bowyer's car.

Earlier Monday, Bowyer announced (in truly Clint Bowyerian fashion) that he and wife Lorra were expecting their first child, a son. The couple got married over the Cup Series' Easter off-weekend.

In his first season with Michael Waltrip Racing, Bowyer finished second to Sprint Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski. Last season he fell back to seventh in the points standings and is 18th this season after a frustrating start to the year.

5-Hour Energy's deal with the team is for 24 races a year through the length of its contract.

Bill Elliott leads 2015 NASCAR Hall of Fame class

Bill Elliott didn't have to wait long to get in the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

In just his first year on the Hall of Fame ballot, Elliott got in during Wednesday's vote for the 2015 class of the NASCAR Hall and will be inducted in January.

Wendell Scott, Joe Weatherly, Rex White and Fred Lorenzen are also going in with Elliott.

Elliott won 44 Sprint Cup Series throughout his career and the 1988 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship. Elliott was eligible for the Hall of Fame in this class because of NASCAR's recently tweaked eligibility guidelines. In December, NASCAR announced that any driver 55 years old or older was immediately eligible, even if he was currently competing. He received 87 percent of the vote.

Scott was the first African-American to win a Sprint Cup Series race. He won at Jacksonville in 1964, leading 27 of 202 laps. He had 20 top-five finishes and 147 top 10s. He got 58 percent.

Weatherly won 25 races and the 1962 and 1963 Cup titles. He was killed when he sustained head injuries in a crash at Riverside in 1964. He got 53 percent.

White won 28 races and was the 1960 champion. In 1962, he won eight races in 37 starts. He got 43 percent.

Lorenzen won 26 Cup races including two Daytona 500s. His win in the 1967 Daytona 500 was the final victory of his career. He got 30 percent.

Notable exclusions from the 2015 Hall class were Rick Hendrick, Buddy Baker, Benny Parsons, Robert Yates, Bruton Smith and Terry Labonte. When NASCAR announced the new eligibility guidelines in December, it also cut the list of nominees from 25 to 20. Jerry Cook, Yates and Parsons were the next three highest vote getters.

One of the people who fell off the list in the cut down from 2014 to 2015 was Anne B. France. France was awarded the inaugural Landmark Award.

The relatively low vote totals of White and Lorenzen do raise an interesting question about future classes of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. How will candidates separate themselves from each other going forward for a case for the Hall? There aren't many slam dunk nominees going to be eligible in the future and the biographies of the 15 people people who will likely carry over to next year's list won't change much.

There?s Nothing Wrong With Restarts

I’ve got to be honest, I don’t understand why there has been so much discussion this week about restarts. The rules are really pretty clear. The green flag waves, the leader can go between the two lines, you can’t beat the leader to the line, and don’t change lanes before the start/finish line. Seems pretty […]

Audi S5 - Driven

I?d honestly not given the S5 much thought before this week. Why, when Audi offers up much flashier models like the R8, RS7, and upcoming TT? It wasn?t until I drove the 2014 S5 Coupe that I discovered this hidden gem in Audi?s lineup. It might not be the most powerful version of the coupe, but with 333 supercharged horses under is mile-long hood and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission sending power to all four wheels, I found myself finding excuses to go for a drive.

It hit me midway through the week that my black-on-black tester with satin chrome accents looks like something Bruce Wayne would drive when not fighting crime in the Batmobile. Its two-door architecture, sleek profile, and menacing color scheme lends itself for the perfect, if not stereotypical, wealthy bachelor?s car. The techno-filled cockpit further solidifies my thoughts as I found myself impressed with the level of refinement in Audi?s MMI infotainment system.

While the S5 might be better suited to a Bruce Wayne kind of lifestyle, it still performed decently enough when the time came to chauffeur the kids around. Yes, a full-sized child seat fits in the back seat. Ingress and egress was made easier by a quick-release lever on the front seatbacks that allowed the chairs to move forward without losing its last position. It afforded just enough room for crawling back to buckle the kiddo.

But a minivan this thing is not. The S5 is more at home on twisty, backcountry roads and making time on the interstate. Its demeanor changes with the driver?s mood ? even without changing the Audi Drive Select system. The S5 makes a great grand touring car capable of long-distance travel and short distance track runs.

Ed Carpenter wins second consecutive Indianapolis 500 pole; Kurt Busch 12th

Ed Carpenter is starting first in the Indianapolis 500 again.

The last qualifier during Sunday's pole qualifying session at Indianapolis, Carpenter snatched the pole from James Hinchcliffe with his four-lap run of 231.067 MPH.

Carpenter started on the pole in the 2013 Indianapolis 500 and finished 10th.

After suffering a concussion in last week's Grand Prix of Indianapolis, Hinchcliffe's Indy 500 was in doubt. However, he was cleared by IndyCar doctors earlier in the week and was able to practice the car before qualifying began.

The top nine qualifiers from Saturday's qualifying session were eligible for the pole on Sunday. Kurt Busch was 10th Saturday, so he was forced to run again and was unable to improve his position. After Sunday's run, Busch will start 12th. Juan Pablo Montoya, in his first Indianapolis 500 since he won in 2000, was the fastest of the non-top nine qualifiers. He'll start 10th.

Busch left Saturday's qualifying session early to get back to Charlotte for the Sprint Cup Series Sprint All-Star Race and only made one attempt. After running the All-Star Race last night, Busch returned to Indianapolis Sunday morning.

After Carpenter and Hinchcliffe, Will Power completes the front row. Helio Castroneves will start fourth and Simon Pagenaud, the winner of the Indy GP, starts fifth.

33 cars attempted to qualify for the race, so no one will miss the show.

2014 Donington World Superbike FP3 Results: Rea Rapidly Wrangles Rain

In a wet morning's untimed session, Jonathan Rea on the Honda was a second and a quarter quicker than Ayrton Badovini's Evo Bimota and Alex Lowes on a Suzuki. A surprising bunch, but as this is the first properly wet session for the Superbikes, it's as unpredictable as expected. The wet track time will be useful for this afternoon's Superpole session as heavy rain looks unavoidable.

Matt Kenseth has a novel idea for the Sprint All-Star Race

With every All-Star Race, there's chatter about changing up the format and/or location of the race. 2014 is no different, especially after Jimmie Johnson has won the last two in dominating fashion.

The format of the race has been tweaked a lot. It isn't sacred. The location? Well, it has been sacred. Since its inception, the race has always been held at Charlotte Motor Speedway save for 1986 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Charlotte is home base for most teams, so that's an added benefit. But if you follow NASCAR at all, you know that a 1.5 mile track like Charlotte isn't the most conducive for close, side-by-side racing.

It's why switching location of the race has started to dominate that chatter. Should the race go to Bristol? Martinsville? Richmond? Opinions vary, but if there's a consensus, it'd be that the race should go to a short track.

Matt Kenseth likes the idea of moving the All-Star Race, but he suggests none of the three tracks mentioned above.

?Here?s what my idea for the All-Star race has always been ? this might not be popular, but I thought of this a couple year ago. I think the All-Star race should move every year and I think it should go to a track that we don?t currently race at, but is equipped to have a NASCAR race. I think it should go to Iowa and Milwaukee and St. Louis and Pikes Peak and maybe even Memphis? you have to have enough grandstands. I think it should move around and go to tracks like that? I think that would be great for all those markets that don?t have a NASCAR race. I think you would sell them out whether that?s 30,000 or 40,000 people, whatever that is. I think the racing would be good and it?s not a points race. I think that would expose a lot of fans to our product live that don?t get to see it now and I think it would be fun.?

Kenseth's on to something here. NASCAR doesn't need the money from attendance at an All-Star Race. It can afford to host it at a track that doesn't seat 80,000 or more people and not even notice it on the overall bottom line. Butts in the seats isn't an issue.

NASCAR is looking for new fans, too. And what better opportunity to get people who may not be normally able to get to a race than to move it to a different market? With potentially good or surprising racing in store at a track where the Cup Series doesn't normally race at, you not only can win over fans who are at the race, but those tuning in to see what the heck NASCAR is all about.

Nothing against Johnson's dominance, but a 10-lap runaway isn't the best way to convince people your sport is awesome.

Plus, it'd be a goodwill gesture to many fans who think NASCAR has "lost its way" or left the racing "back in the day" behind. There wasn't a bad review around of the Truck Series race at Eldora in 2013. There's little reason to think it wouldn't be the same for a race at Memphis, or, say, Gateway, which produced some great Nationwide and Truck Series racing.

But we're also going to be realistic; Kenseth's idea probably isn't going to happen. SMI, the company that owns Charlotte, won't want to let the All-Star Race leave. It owns Bristol, so if the race departs Charlotte, it could satisfy the short track wailing by moving to Bristol.

We appreciate the originality, however. The more logical and reasoned options for the All-Star Race, the better. Because if it's another ho-hum race Saturday night, the cries for changes are only going to intensify before the Coca-Cola 600.

Martin Truex Jr. didn't anticipate the start to the season he's having

Through eight races, Martin Truex Jr. is 28th in the points standings and has just two top-20 finishes. Did he ever envision the season could start the way it did?

"I didn't, I'll be honest with you," Truex said Tuesday while participating in a tire test at Kansas Speedway. "We've been running ? the car's been fast. Man, we've had everything you can imagine bad happen to us."

Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch are also below 20th in the points standings, but the sting of their poor starts and bad luck have been eased by wins and likely Chase qualification. Truex doesn't have that luxury at the moment.

At the season-opening Daytona 500, he lost an engine and finished 43rd. While restrictor plate engine failures are fluky, the following seven races have made Truex's look like a sign of what was to come with his new team before the season's first off week.

"It's just been one of those seasons," Truex said. "The other night (at Darlington) we blew a tire for no reason at all and we were running good. A lot of crazy stuff has happened. At California we wrecked in practice because we blew a tire and we had a backup car that was really fast and in the race and I ran 23 laps and hit a piece of debris that absolutely destroyed the nose of the car. So it's like one of these days I'm waiting for a meteor to hit the car, come out of the sky and hit it. It's been one of those kinds of starts."

While the meteor seems farfetched, if Truex's current rate of misfortune keeps up it may be possible. In addition to Daytona, California and Darlington, he crashed at Martinsville and Bristol.

He joined Furniture Row for the 2014 season in the final weeks of 2013 after Truex lost his ride at Michael Waltrip Racing when longtime sponsor NAPA left the team. Truex was coming off what was a Chase berth until his team was penalized for the Richmond race manipulation scandal and Furniture Row was following up on its first Chase berth. It was a partnership that, while inevitable because of the lack of options for either party, had the potential to be fruitful.

It still does. However, Truex may already be in a position of needing to win to qualify for the Chase. At more than three full races off the points lead, getting into the Chase via points already looks unlikely.

"But the team's done a great job," Truex said. "They're keeping their heads up, they're building fast race cars. I feel like we're getting better each week even though the results aren't showing it. We're learning about each other and getting better, so we've got to just keep our heads up and keep working on that and hopefully we can squeak out a win there somewhere and get in the Chase."
