Amendment to ban military sports sponsorship doesn?t pass U.S. House
The amendment to the 2013 defense spending bill that would have prohibited military branches from sports sponsorship didn't pass in the House of Representatives Wednesday night.
The amendment, which was sponsored by Rep. Betty McCollum (D, MN) and Rep. Jack Kingston (R, GA), fell 216-202. It would have cut more than $72 million from the proposed $608 billion bill. Supporters of the amendment argued that the return on the investment from sponsorships like on Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s car doesn't match the investment.
Racing would have been the sport most heavily affected by the cuts. Earnhardt and IndyCar Series driver JR Hildebrand are sponsored by the National Guard and NHRA driver Tony Schumacher is sponsored by the US Army. Ryan Newman is currently sponsored by the Army in the Cup Series, but the Army previously announced that it wouldn't be returning in 2013. The vote does not affect the Army's decision to leave the Sprint Cup Series, and it also said that it would be staying in the NHRA.
It was the third time that an amendment to ban sports sponsorships has been presented and defeated. However, the vote has gotten closer the last two times, so there's a fair chance that we'll see similar arguments in the near future, perhaps even on the next defense spending bill. Want to see how your representative voted? The House posts all vote results here.

Two drivers injured in practices for X Games RallyCross event
Practicing for RallyCross during this summer's X Games is proving to be a very dangerous, uh, practice.
The RallyCross track in Los Angeles has received lots of publicity for its life-size orange Hot Wheels loop, but two drivers have been taken to the hospital after crashes that didn't involve the loop. (The loop was used for a world record stunt Saturday. It's not part of the regular course.)
On Friday, Toomas Hekkinen (in the video above) was making a ramp jump and wasn't carrying enough speed. Because of that, his car crashed head on into the landing ramp and landed on the ground below upside down. Hekkinen fractured his left ankle.
Saturday, Marcus Grnholm was knocked unconscious and taken to the hospital after crashing. Grnholm had safely navigated a ramp jump and looked to be arcing out for the next turn and hit the base of a lightpole with the left-front side of his car. According to X Games officials, Grnholm is awake and alert and was undergoing further tests.
The X Games event is the third of five on the 2012 Global RallyCross schedule.

Lexus GS F Sport by Wald International
| Posted on 07.19.2012 04:00 by Simona | |
Launched late in 2011, the Lexus GS F-Sports has only received an upgrade package from Five Axis. The main reason for that, of course, is that the sports sedan doesn’t look like it needs any upgrades, unless you’re looking at it through the eyes of Wald International.
The Japanese tuner’s new "Executive Line" aero package is based mostly on upgrading the exterior of the vehicle. It consists of a new front spoiler, darkened headlamp and taillight bezels, new side skirts, and a rear apron with a diffuser. The car also comes with a new set of alloy wheels and, upon request, Wald International will add a larger boot spoiler and a new suspension kit.
To be honest, we would have loved a boost in power; maybe next time. For now, customers will have to settle for the standard 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 306 HP.
Prices for the new Lexus GS-F Sport by Wald International will be announced at a later date.

Chad Norris to take over as crew chief for Carl Edwards
Carl Edwards will have a new crew chief for the rest of 2012.
Bob Osborne, Edwards' crew chief for all but 27 races of his Sprint Cup Series career, is stepping down from his post atop the No. 99 pit box for medical reasons. Chad Norris will become Edwards' crew chief.
"I have had the pleasure of working with Carl Edwards for the past nine years and, during that time, my focus has been building a championship-caliber program," Osborne said in a release. "I'm proud of the 18 wins we've had together in Sprint Cup Series competition and our two second-place points finishes.
"At this time in my life, however, concerns with my health have necessitated that I change my role within the organization," Osborne added. "This transition is not an easy one, but I'm thankful to have the full support of Jack [Roush], Carl and the entire organization. I also have every confidence in Chad Norris, and I look forward to working with him as we continue to pursue a championship in 2012. I also appreciate the privacy and respect that the community will give me and my family during this difficult time."
[Power Rankings: When in doubt go with Jimmie Johnson]
Osborne will remain with Roush as a senior member of the company's management team and steering committee. Norris has been with Roush Fenway since 2005 and was in charge of Roush's R&D team and was the crew chief for Ricky Stenhouse in the Daytona 500.
Edwards, who finished second to Tony Stewart in last year's Chase, is currently in 11th place in the Sprint Cup points standings ?46 points behind 10th place Brad Keselowski. However, Edwards is currently sitting outside the Chase at the moment with zero wins. His last win was at Las Vegas back in March of 2011. Stewart and Edwards were tied in the points column at the end of last season, but Stewart had five wins to Edwards' one.

Following a 20th-place finish at Kentucky in which Edwards had to stop late for fuel, Edwards backed Osborne, calling him the best crew chief in the business and urged his team to stick together.
"I cannot say enough good things about Bob Osborne," Edwards said in a statement. "I'm so thankful for what he's done for me as a driver, and he is without a doubt one of the smartest guys in the sport. I'm also appreciative of the fact that he'll continue to be a resource for me and our team as we focus on these final races. We're very fortunate to have Chad Norris as part of our organization to take over for the No. 99. I've known Chad for a long time and he is a fierce competitor. We've got our work cut out for us over the next seven races, and I've got every confidence Chad can lead our team to where we need to be."
Will Norris be the spark that Edwards needs over the final seven races to snag a wild card or move into the top 10?

Video: Wrap up the Daytona weekend right here
This past Daytona weekend was one of the more interesting outings we've had all year. From an outstanding Nationwide race to a war of attrition in the Sprint Cup level, you couldn't quite figure how anything was going to play out, and that doesn't even account for AJ Allmendinger's, uh, "incident." But at least we've now got a new catchphrase, "A sample," to go with "Channel 2" and the orange cone and all those other memes. Relive the best of the weekend with the video above.
And for those of you looking to dodge work a little longer, here's the full race rewind:
