Austin Dillon subbing for Tony Stewart at Michigan

Austin Dillon was tabbed by Stewart-Haas Racing on Monday to be the replacement driver for Tony Stewart at Michigan on Sunday.

Dillon currently leads the Nationwide Series points standings by three points over Sam Hornish.

?I?ve watched Austin for many years and at each stage of his racing career he?s been successful,? Stewart said in a team release. ?He?s proven to be a very fast learner, and he?s able to adapt quickly. Being the youngest champion in the history of the Truck Series is proof of that. His background in dirt racing is an asset, and off the track we share many of the same interests, specifically, hunting and fishing. I know he?ll perform well at Michigan and I?m just as confident in his ability to properly represent Mobil 1 and Bass Pro Shops throughout the race weekend.?

See, just like in all relationships, common interests are foundational for a replacement driver. Bass Pro Shops sponsored Dillon when he won the 2010 Camping World Truck Series title.

The team has not named a replacement for the races starting after Michigan, though Dillon is likely still a candidate to replace Stewart for more races until he returns from the broken leg he suffered in a sprint car race in Iowa a week ago. Stewart was released from the hospital in North Carolina following a second surgery on Sunday evening.

"Well, it's going to be a weekly occurrence here for a little while," Stewart-Haas Racing Competition Director Greg Zipadelli said Monday afternoon about the replacement process for Stewart. "We'll evaluate each race as it comes and do the best job we can with putting someone in it we feel will do a good job for Stewart?Haas and all of our partners."

"We will probably know more next week. Tony has a doctor's appointment Wednesday here to just kind of go over things, and at that point we'll have a lot better idea of what we're doing. But for right now it will probably be a week?by?week decision as far as who is in the car."

Zipadelli seemed to rule out a Nationwide Series driver for Stewart's seat at Michigan on Friday at Watkins Glen, as the Nationwide Series is running that weekend at Mid-Ohio. Ultimately, Dillon's schedule was able to be adapted for both races. He tested earlier this season at Mid-Ohio, and practice for the series' first race at the road course begins Thursday, allowing him to spend Friday at Michigan. Dillon ran the first Michigan Sprint Cup race in the No. 33 and finished 11th.

That's his highest finish in seven Sprint Cup Series starts this season. In July, he won the first Camping World Truck Series race at Eldora, the dirt track that Stewart owns.

Shaquille O?Neal: Racing was the toughest three hours of his life

NASCAR devotees spend a fair portion of their lives hearing the same tired complaints from non-race fans: "That's a sport? I drive in traffic can I drive a NASCAR too HA HA HA!" No, you hypothetical clown, you couldn't, and here's no less than Shaquille O'Neal to tell you why.

In an interview with NASCAR.com, O'Neal recalled the time in 2010 when he raced Dale Earnhardt Jr. for the reality show "Shaq Vs." And O'Neal came away impressed:

"Whoever said these guys aren?t athletes are out of their minds," he said. "That was the toughest three hours I?ve ever had in my life. I was fitted for a car, me and Dale raced 50 laps, and I slept for two days after that. I really did."

It wasn't just the heat and the confined space. "I was terrified," O'Neal continued. "I don?t really get scared by a lot of stuff, but I was freaking terrified. You definitely have to be a great shape to do this."

Oh, and one other element: "You?ve got to be small. I don?t think a big guy like me would really survive out on the track. You?ve got to be smaller."

O'Neal added that he has almost no automotive knowledge, despite the fact that he owns both a Ferrari and a Lamborghini. But he has driven 220 mph somewhere down the line. So surely someone can find a place for this guy on a startup NASCAR team?

Audi RS6 Avant

The all-new Audi RS6 sedan is great and we already know pretty much everything there is to know about it. The new RS6 Avant, on the other hand, remained a relative mystery since details of it first leaked. As time went on, our patience wore thin and we managed to dig up some information on it to wet our hot-hatch whistle a little.

Now that we have pretty much found out all of the important details and even found some rather official-looking leaked images, Audi has lifted the veil and released the RS6 Avant?s details. We didn?t expect to see the RS6 Avant?s information until the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, so we are wondering if Audi released this information willingly or if its hand was pushed by the automotive industry?s prying eyes.

Sure, we?ll go ahead and take some credit for this early information release.

Updated 12/11/2012: Audi has released a trailer video for its new RS6 Avant. The video shows the new sports wagon in action on the road and offers an idea on how the engine under the hood sounds like. Enjoy! Oh, and what a glorious sound it is. Enjoy!

Updated 08/09/2013: Audi unveiled a new commercial video for its RS6 Avant. The idea behind the commercial is that with every RS6 Avant you will also have parts from the R18 Le Mans Prototype racecar.

Click past the jump to read all of the intimate details on the 2013 Audi RS6.

Audi RS6 Avant originally appeared on topspeed.com on Friday, 9 August 2013 17:00 EST.

Morgan Shepherd, age 71, set to be oldest Sprint Cup driver ever

On Sunday, Morgan Shepherd is scheduled to strap into the No. 52 of Brian Keselowski Motorsports to race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Shepherd is 71 years old, and thus will become the oldest driver ever to run in NASCAR's elite-level Sprint Cup series.

"Let me say something," Morgan wrote on his Facebook page, "age has nothing to do with it. I am as fit and healthy as any of them younger guys. 71 is just a number. Thank all of you for your support and prayers for something like this."

Only 43 cars will be seeking to qualify for the race, meaning Shepherd is guaranteed entry. His team owner, Brian Keselowski, is the brother of reigning Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski. The car will be sponsored by SupportMilitary.org, and will feature a tribute to the 19 firefighters recently killed in Arizona on its hood. The team is hoping to run the entire race, depending on the car's condition and how Shepherd feels behind the wheel.

Shepherd has four wins at the Sprint Cup level. His best season came in 1990, when he finished fifth in the standings. (Dale Earnhardt won that year.) He continues to race in the Nationwide series, including this year.

Here's a bit more perspective: Morgan ran his first race in what is now NASCAR's Sprint Cup level back in June 1970. Greg Biffle is the only driver currently in NASCAR's top 20 who was even alive back then, and Biffle was just six months old. (Also, Sprint Cup was the Grand National series, and the race was run at the Hickory Speedway in North Carolina. Those were different days.)

The Nationwide Series Is Going To Be Awesome In 2013

Thanks to a strong mix of young drivers and veterans trying to fight their way back to the top, with help from the NASCAR rule limiting drivers to one series for points, we are about to see the re-emergence of the Nationwide Series in 2013. I mean, have you seen the driver lineup? Instead of [...]

Power Rankings: Where should Brian Vickers go?

It's time for Power Rankings! After every race, we'll opine about who we think is at the top of the Sprint Cup heap and how and why they got there. Remember, this isn't scientific, as our formula is the perfect blend of analytics and bias against your favorite driver. So let's get on with it now, shall we?

1. Jimmie Johnson (LW: 1): From 43rd to 6th, nice Sunday drive with a fast car, move along, nothing to see here, right? Wait, what? Johnson was disqualified from qualifying second on Friday because his car was too low? Woof. The zealots were out in full force asking for Johnson and company to be penalized further than they were after that qualifying violation. By rule, they weren't. Simple as that. And that 6th place finish was a hard-earned one.

2. Kevin Harvick (LW: 2): One spot behind Jimmie in the race and in Power Rankings. What about your heart? Harvick sent an early, a forceful, message to Marcos Ambrose at New Hampshire, calling the Aussie "a weapon" over his team radio. Harvick has won at Watkins Glen before; how fun would it be to see the two of them going for the win at the road course and Ambrose has a chance to exact some payback?

3. Kyle Busch (LW: 7): After the race, Busch said something that's striking -- and no, I'm not referencing the comments about Ryan Newman. Rather it was about his finishes when the team hasn't crashed or had an engine issue. If you count getting caught up in the crash at Daytona last week as he crossed the finish line, eight races have been marred. We've run 19 races this season. Busch has 11 top 10s. And even if you don't want to count Daytona, that's fine. He finished 12th.

4. Matt Kenseth (LW: 4): Kenseth says that he didn't hit Kurt Busch before Busch got into Ryan Newman and they went spinning into the wall. Is that a similar line to what we saw from Johnson and Knaus at Daytona? In both cases, the replays are awfully, awfully close. Either way with Kenseth and Busch, we've seen how sensitive these cars are under braking with another car on their quarterpanel and Busch learned it first-hand. Flatline does get bonus points for getting the car slowed down enough to not be in the crash himself, however.

5. Clint Bowyer (LW: 3): Bowyer scraped out a 13th place finish after not being anywhere near the front the entire second half of the race and pitting late. Fresh tires and a mass of late race restarts will help that. But of course, Johnson finished in sixth, meaning that Bowyer lost seven more points to the No. 48. Though we all know the points chase for the top spot is futile at this point.

6. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (LW: 6): After three straight weeks of being sixth in the Power Rankings, (*Gasp!* Jimmie's not the devil, Junior is!) let's move Junior up a spot. He's another great example of the dichotomy of New Hampshire. Either you had something notable happen to you during the race or you just were another driver. Junior's 14th puts him squarely in the latter category.

7. Carl Edwards (LW: 9): We'll call this the Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart bump. Much like Bowyer and Junior ahead of him, Edwards had a very nondescript good finish at New Hampshire, coming home eighth. There's another top 10 for the resume, one that's exceptionally Chase-worthy at this point. Chase-contender worthy? That's another story.

8. Brian Vickers (LW: NR): If Vickers gets the No. 55 ride full-time next season, could he be a regular fixture in this feature next year? Here's a statistical oddity: if the Chase started right now, the No. 55 car would be in the Owner's Points Chase as a Wild Card team. How fun would that be? We've seen split championships in the Nationwide Series, and now we can say there's at least a chance of it happening in the Cup Series.

9. Kurt Busch (LW: 5): When is Kurt going to exhaust every opportunity to not capitalize on an exceptionally fast car? Or will the wheel of destruction start spitting out duplicates? All is definitely not lost despite Busch's five spot drop in the standings, but it will be if the wheel keeps on spinning.

10. Tony Stewart (LW: 8): This is probably harsh for Stewart, who was setting up to be in command of a Chase berth before being passed by Vickers for the lead with 15 to go. And hell, he would have solidified his points standing with a second straight second place finish. Alas, the late caution -- which initially looked like a gifted opportunity to get the win back -- was his gas tank's emptying.

11. Brad Keselowski (LW: NR): Is finishing fourth a missed opportunity? Maybe. Yeah, it would have been great for @Kes to get a win and move the storyline from "Missing the Chase?" to "He's back!", but it ended up moving towards the second angle anyway with his late top-five charge. He moved up four spots in the standings.

12. Kasey Kahne (LW: 10): Kahne's backstretch save at New Hampshire is one of the saves of the season. Not only was it a display of exceptional driving ability to get the car pointed in the right direction without losing more spots than he did, but it might have saved any hopes of making the Chase via the top 10 as well.

Lucky Dog: How about Jeff Burton and Aric Almirola? Burton finished third and Almirola finished fifth, and the two are now 16th (Almirola) and 17th (Burton) in the standings.

The DNF: Tough two weeks from Joey Logano, as he's gone from 10th-19th. That's an almost unprecedented drop this late in the season, but the points standings have gone mad in that vicinity.

Dropped Out: Greg Biffle, Jamie McMurray

It?s Brad Keselowski?s time to be in a ?This is SportsCenter? commercial

You've undoubtedly seen a NASCAR 'This is SportsCenter' commercial from ESPN, whether it's been Kevin Harvick in his firesuit, Jimmie Johnson's speed bump removing or Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s technical expertise. Now it's Brad Keselowski's turn in the clever commercial series.

The 2012 Sprint Cup champ is joined by Big Red, the Western Kentucky mascot, who can't fit in Keselowski's car despite a number of attempts. His only alternative is anchor Kevin Neghandi's minivan. Can you blame him for being persistent? Check it out above; it may rival Harvick's for the best in NASCAR class.

Casey Stoner To Test Honda's MotoGP Bikes At Motegi, Racing Ruled Out

Motorcycle News are reporting that Casey Stoner is to test Honda's 2014 RC213V at Motegi in August. The former two-time World Champion will ride both next year's factory machine, as well as the production racer version which Honda are preparing to sell to private teams, and which Scott Redding has been linked with riding at Gresini next season.

HRC have flatly denied that the test is a prelude to a MotoGP return for the Australian, according to MCN. Stoner will not race as a wildcard in either Phillip Island or Motegi, as early rumors have suggested. According to MCN's Matthew Birt on Twitter, Casey Stoner is "still 100% happy with his decision to retire."
