2012 season in the rear view: Ryan Newman
Vitals: 14th in the points standings. 1 win, 6 top 5s, 14 top 10s. 5 DNFs.
Moment to remember: Ryan Newman, king of the stealth victory. His only win in 2010 came when he held off a race dominating Jeff Gordon after a late two-tire pit stop for track position at Phoenix. And his only win in 2012? Well that was even stealthier.
Newman was third on the inside line after a late-race caution for David Reutimann, and he made contact with Clint Bowyer's bumper before they dove into turn one. Bowyer was committed to the inside line and had a ton of momentum. Too much, in fact. There was no room for he and Gordon and Jimmie Johnson side-by-side-by-side in Martinsville's tight corners, and the three went around, opening the door for Newman to take the lead and hold on for the win.
Moment to forget: With three races to go in the race to the Chase, Newman was ahead of both Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch for the final Wild Card Chase berth. But then Newman crashed at Bristol after contact with old nemesis Juan Pablo Montoya and finished 36th.
And then, to add insult to injury, Newman crashed the following week at Atlanta.
The wrap: Those two races -- two of Newman's three worst finishes on the season -- couldn't have come at a worse time, as they dropped him from 13th to 17th in the points standings. Newman was never a true title threat all season, but in typical Newman style, racked up enough top 10 finishes to stay in the Chase conversation for most of the season.

Casey Stoner Rules Out A Return To Grand Prix Racing
With Casey Stoner preparing to take the next step in his sporting career - the long-expected switch to racing in the Australian V8 Supercars series - the two-time MotoGP champion is facing increasing scrutiny over the exact timing of his future plans. An announcement is expected soon confirming that Stoner will be racing in the Dunlop V8 Supercar Series, the support class to the main series, with Triple Eight racing and full Red Bull backing. On Sunday, the Australian newspaper the Sunday Mail reported that Stoner had already signed to race in the series, a report which Stoner immediately denied on his Twitter feed.
The Sunday Mail story draws at length from an interview to be published in the official program for the Clipsal 500 Adelaide race to be held in March. In the cited interview, Stoner also repeated that he had no intention to return to motorcycle racing at any point, despite the extremely generous offers he had received to keep him there. "I've got no thoughts whatsoever at this time of ever even thinking of coming back to grand prix racing,'' the Sunday Mail quotes Stoner as saying.

Kevin Swindell wins fourth straight Chili Bowl Nationals
The indoor midget race in Tulsa, Oklahoma, once again attracted the likes of Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne after they got done with preseason testing at Daytona, but it was Swindell who dominated the show from the front row, becoming the first driver to win four straight Chili Bowls.
Heck, he was the first driver to win consecutive Chili Bowls. His dad Sammy, who has five titles to his credit, finished second.
As for Stewart and Kahne, they weren't so lucky. Stewart finished a lap down in 15th after starting 12th in Saturday night's A-Main. Kahne didn't make the A-Main and neither did Justin Allgaier.
Kyle Larson, a development driver for Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing who has made four starts in the Camping World Truck Series last year and won the K&N East title, might have been Kevin Swindell's biggest challenger. However after spinning out as the two were battling for the lead early in the race on lap 18, Larson's night ended after another caution.

Moment to remember: After winning at Michigan in August, Biffle issued this statement:
Biffle was battling with Jimmie Johnson in the waning laps when Johnson lost an engine. On the ensuing restart for the oil that Johnson's car dropped on the track, Biffle pulled away from Brad Keselowski for his second win of the season.
The win also vaulted Biffle to the Sprint Cup Series points lead for the second time of the season and he'd hold that lead until the points were reset before Chicago.
Moment to forget: Biffle's proclamation at Michigan wasn't supported by finishing outside the top 10 in the first three Chase races. But the final blow to his championship hopes came at Kansas, when Biffle hit the turn four wall. He finished 27th, his lowest finish of the season, and left the track 11th in the points standings.
The wrap: Heck, it's almost like Biffle and Carl Edwards swapped places at Roush from last year to this year. After only three top fives and 10 top 10s all of last season, Biffle was a mainstay at the front of the field this season. And the fact that Kansas was the lowest finish of the season for Biffle was a testament to how well the team ran on a weekly basis. Biffle finished outside the top 20 an astonishing four times in 2012 and on two of those occasions, he finished 21st.
If we're looking for a stick-and-ball sports comparison, Biffle's closest comp could be the 2001 Seattle Mariners;� a team with a fantastic regular season that gets lost in the lights of a playoff loss.
